my current bios is as follows on kt4v ms6712 motherboard:
BIOS Type: AMI
BIOS Date: 07/29/03
BIOS ID String: 62-0729-009999-00101111-040201-VIA_K7-1AARK204
OEM Signon: A6712VMS V1.9 072903
Chipset: VIA 82C3189 REV 0
I would like to update the bios and need direction where i can download - any help much appreciated.

According to MSI's website, you have the latest BIOS for the KT4VL Motherboard.
They list the latest version as 1.9 and you clearly have V1.9 as you can see in the BIOS ID String.
Go to www.msicomputer.com to resaearch it further or to see what I'm talking about.
