Myself, I stay away from using smilies. I used to use them years ago, though I stopped since it seems inappropriate to me.

Smilies are essential for use online since there is no emotion in text.

I see your point, though I think some people overuse them to the point it's obnoxious.

On MSFN, the only smilie I've ever used is  since I occasionally wander down the wacky road. However, I make great use of LOL, LOL!, (LOL), (LOL!) -- (note that there is a *great difference* in the meaning of these 4 versions) -- lol, lol!, (lol), (lol!), LOL, LOL!, (LOL), (LOL!), and lol, lol!, (lol), (lol!). With these 16 nuanced versions of "laugh out loud", I sometimes spend hours deciding on which one to use in a particular situation when I make a Post on MSFN. (Just kidding, I'm not that wacky.)
P.S.
I like your avatar, but I especially like your member name, "blackturbokitty", for its juxtaposition of the aggressive and forceful (i.e., "turbo") with the gentle and fragile (i.e., "kitty"). You don't have a split personality do you? (lol)
(It only took me 45 minutes to determine that this was the appropriate version of "laugh out loud" to use here.)

I keep lol in my signature, so I rarely actually have to type it myself.

A great image, Tripredacus.
I looked fixedly at it for 30 minutes and became hypnotized. I had to take a cold shower to become un-hypnotized.
LOL, LOL!, (LOL), (LOL!), lol, lol!, (lol), (lol!), LOL, LOL!, (LOL), (LOL!), lol, lol!, (lol), (lol!) !!
Here is my *static* response to your image. ( I was thinking about van Gogh's "Starry Night" as I made it.)

A better one - NOT smilies, though :

As well as humour, judging from the image in your avatar, you may be able to appreciate this one (still OT ):

Seriously, jaclaz, I did appreciate your i and pi cartoon. (I got a good chuckle out of it.)
I had never seen a mathematical cartoon along those lines before.
If you have some other favorite links in your collection that you'd like to post -- (if it's not too much trouble) -- I'd certainly be happy to check them out. Thanks.
P.S.
Pee-Wee Herman would certainly love pi, for it indeed goes on to "infinity" !
