Hello,
I have a question that has been bothering me for a while now. Is there a way to reinstate the boot screen in Windows Vista that was available before SP1?

The only time I've seen that is when you put the PC to hibernate, then swap the HDD and wake it up. I didn't ever see it at any other time of boot or installation.

I read somewhere that the image was in winload.exe.mui but I replaced that with the original file and it is still the same.

What is the same? Do you get the green progressbar only? Have you selected the "NoGuiBoot" option.

The boot screen changes to the image when resuming from hibernation, starting with Service Pack 1. I have selected the /NoGuiBoot option.
I am trying to restore the pre-SP1 boot screen.

in RTM it worked as above said, no gui option in msconfig
don't see why wouldn't it work with SP1 and 2 too

I googled and found users back at this time who also had the issue.

I have to search my Vista RTM x86 ISO first to get the RTM files and next I'll look at the Sp2 files.

I've checked the code for RTM and Sp2 and have no idea why Vista no longer allows you to use custom pictures. The code in OslDisplayInitialize for RTM and Sp2 does the same and tries to load the osload800x600.bmp or osload1024x768.bmp from the WIM which is includes as a resource

I am not quite sure what that meant.

it means I have no idea why you can use the RTM picture The code is still there but doesn't work.

could be that some reg key is blocking it ?
like changes of nogui boot that should trigger it doesn't because reg key is either enforced or ignored
