You can load MSCDEX.EXE to access optical drives. There are DOS USB Drivers, but having never used them myself, I will leave that one for others who have more experience with them. ;)

OR do "the right thing" and use SHSUCDX, instead ;).

Seriously, MSCDEX cannot possibly recognize and access a number of CD's, simply because some of the .iso extensions were made AFTER the MSCDEX was released.

About USB, your best choice is to try this floppy here:

strangely down :w00t::ph34r:, via Wayback Machine  :

Really? Not this argument again! :P

I'll stick with MSCDEX until it fails me, which it has not. And MSCDEX should already be on the OP's system as opposed to looking for a 3rd party tool.

NO prob whatever :thumbup .

As already said:

You are leading the discussion, because you are trying to persuade me to use MKISOFS, GRUB4DOS, and SHSUCDX, without giving me an answer as to whether I can use a standard Win98 Boot Disk and standard El Torito emulation to do this.

I do not want to use ANY of these things if this project can be accomplished without them.

I won't get involved in a flame war about MSCDEX.EXE vs. SHSUCDX.EXE or mkisofs vs magiciso or whatever, they all seem to me like King Kong vs. Godzilla (and JFYI, the dinosaur can get rid of that grown up chimpanzee with one hand tied behind his back, anytime ;))

You want MSCDEX.EXE, have it, it's all yours. :)

Just for the record, you forgot a "yet" in your sentence  :

I'll stick with MSCDEX until it fails me, which it has not, yet.

Actually, chances are it won't fail me.

Because after that particular learning experience and the mess that MKISOFS made of my project, when I'm creating a CD/DVD that I plan to use (or use part(s) of) in DOS I PLAN AHEAD and use 8.3 filenames and so forth. :angel:P

You should avoid uttering famous last words...

Anyway, when it fails you do try Jack Ellis' version 3.03E of SHSUCDX first. :P

Sure, that's EXACTLY the kind of situation where Murphy's Law - that normally hides in the dark - simply loves to come out in the open and prove itself - once again - dramatically true:

If anything can go wrong, it will

in this particular case also a lesser known extension woud apply  :

Extension: it will be all your fault, and everyone will know it.
