WinPE (bartpe/minipe whatever) WITH NO RAMDRIVE

Okay, here's the thing:

I've got winPE on CD.

I use PE to USB to put it on a USB stick.

It is now NO LONGER on a read-only media.

Making the ramdisk obsolete.

I also have another USB stick which detects as the C drive in "my computer".

Either one of these could do.

I'm pretty new to this whole process, but I KNOW ramdrive, I used it well and often when I had windows 3.1, 95, and 98. It was helpful and handy back then. This is no longer the case.

I wish to use one of these USB harddrives as my "ramdrive" instead of an actual ramdrive. My computer is fairly low on ram as it is, and it's a total b***h when I'm running the PE build.

So, put in short: How do I go about doing this exactly? What do I need to delete or edit or whatever to tell it to look for the C drive as the storage drive instead of the ramdrive? How do I make it use that? Help?

Thanks for your time.

How do I go about finding any of that out?

It's windows xp pro if that's what you mean.

How EXACTLY did you build your PE?

Like with BartPE, manually, with Winbuilder, UBCD4WIN, and HOW (which settings/plugins/chooices, whatever)?

Which is the EXACT source?

XP pro source is not enough, which SP?

"fairly low" is not a defined quantity of RAM :w00t: .

Is it 128, 256, 512 Mb of RAM or how much exactly?

JFYI:

PE 1.x <-Source XP or Server 2003

PE 2.x <-Source Vista  or Server 2008

PE 3.x <- Sounce Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2

PE 4.x <- Source Windows 8

How can I go about finding this out from within the PE build? I got the win PE CD from a torrent to be specific. I got my own windows XP pro CD and all, but whenever I kept trying to make my own PE copy, I kept screwing up. Badly. So I resorted to that. (and BEFORE people b***h at me about torrents, because I've seen people get bitched out on other forums about this, no I do not support piracy, no, I was not pirating, yes I already own my own copy of XP pro, meaning it's perfectly legal to torrent in a win pe of it). I had burned the ISO to a CD using alcohol 120, but it was too limited like that, so I found a way to put it on a USB stick.

Memory Card Reader Card reader ( SD Memory Card )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And on a final note: PE windows identifies itself as windows XP when I right-click the my computer icon and click on properties. There's also a bunch of weird OEM information that got added, if that could help?

I just want to know how to get rid of this ramdrive crap, please. Can't someone tell me the methods for each PE #.x and I could look for myself and see? whichever one works, obviously it was that build.

How can I go about finding this out from within the PE build?

You CANNOT. :(

You see, if you knew how to do that you would also know how to build your PE and you wouldn't "resort" to anything.

I got the win PE CD from a torrent to be specific.

It is interesting how the meaning of a word can be interpreted differently.

I read "from a torrent to be specific" exactly as "from somewhere to be generalistic".

I got my own windows XP pro CD and all, but whenever I kept trying to make my own PE copy, I kept screwing up. Badly.

Yep, this happens to lot's of people.

When this happens they tend to resort to asking for help in learning how to avoid screwing up (badly or slightly) their PE builds, INSTEAD.

Nothing bad about torrents, about UNredistributable contents, redistributed through torrents (WAREZ), plenty.

My educated guess is that some of the Admins/Mods have a different take from you on the subject of legality of such PE's, but more than that, independently from it being legal or not, I believe that is NOT allowed on this board, see Rules #1.a and #1.b:

I would venture to say that this is a LiveXP...

Might is suggest that since
I already own my own copy of XP pro
that you look into Winbuilder (and note the link to Reboot) and "roll your own" the legal way. The one you currently have already contains WinXP files (warez) undoubtedly "pre-built" using WinBuilder. "Rolling Your Own" requires that you already own a Legitimate XP CD (WinBuilder just "copies" them from that to the LiveXP). Note that WinPE is a different beast entirely.

FYI, there is a vast amount of info on MSFN/Reboot to do all of the things mentioned (Building and booting from HDD/USB/RAM-ISO/RAM-HDD, etc etc).

Start from "scratch" and you will get assistance. Otherwise...

Can I dare to ask on what basis from the information posted you managed to "venture" into stating that it is made through using Winbuilder and namely the LiveXP project?

Eh... could be wrong... A$$-U-MED that since "My Computer" was on Desktop and "Weird OEM Info" was also displayed that it may have been (there's an option somewhere there to allow for it - I turn it off). I imagine a savvy bloke could "roll their own" PE1.x manually from a PE1.x from MSDN/OEM Partner (not a lot of fun either - tried it... or maybe via BartPE, which I don't use).

However, the point is still... Bad JuJuWarez!

Attempt to make your own (by whatever means) with your XP CD and we'll be glad to help. I personally don't want to delve into "fixing" a torrent PE (which STILL has proprietary not-yours MS XP in it) to allow for booting from HDD instead of RAM.

I have WinBuilder LiveXP and have all of the Bootable variations (very handy) which I, of course, BUILT from an XP CD. Sure I could "help" you but choose not to - not under the circumstances... I'm pretty sure nobody else will either. It would require KNOWING what's "inside" the torrent-Image - and I DON'T want to know.

I'll make sure to include more commas where needed. (about misreading the specifics)

"» No Illegal/Copyrighted Software Discussion" nope, didn't do that, simply included a disclaimer.

"1.a This is not a warez site! Links/Requests to warez and/or illegal material (e.g., cracks, serials, etc.) will not be tolerated." no links, everyone knows how to get to those places anyway, that would be futile.

" Discussion of circumventing WGA/activation/timebombs/license restrictions, use of keygens, or any other illegal activity, including, but not limited to, requests for help where pirated software is being used or being discussed, will also not be tolerated. Offenders may be banned on first violation." also nope. but thanks for quoting this. I know how touchy a subject it can be.

"1.b Respect the requests of companies who do not permit redistribution of their products without express permission - including unmodified hotfix/feature pack packages. Download sources for official software should be from the vendor directly where possible. Posts made containing this type of content may be removed immediately without warning, and offenders may be banned on first violation." See, problem HERE is that microsoft no longer supports windows XP. At all. They've officially discontinued support for it. Their solution to any new problems? Upgrade to Vista or higher. (ugh...*shudders* vista...) but I have respected the requests of these things to the fullest allowable extent.

Anyway, seeing all the new posts on making my own PE, I'll try AGAIN. thanks guys.

It would have helped so much if someone had included those instructions for diff versions like I'd asked tho.

If I get it right, you have only 128 Mb of RAM?

If this is the case, I am afraid that both the WinPE 2.x and 3.x are usually too big for that (still provided that you have the corresponding Vista  or 7 Sources) and even a PE 1.x has to be very limited.

If I were you I would try the NaughtyPE project first:

http://reboot.pro/3866/

or the most minimal LiveXP you can find among Amalux's "frozen builds":

http://reboot.pro/4111/
