Hello,

I've just recovered from a "Windows Boot Loader" crash/error on my Windows Server 2008 R2 since then none of MMC snap-ins are working (you could see print screens below).
1. Run "sfc /scannow" - now errors were detected.
2. Didn't tried this solution http://support.micro....com/kb/2486109 because I don't have another copy of "machine.config" file.
3. Tried this with no luck: "Navigate to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG and Rename machine.config to machine.config.old"

Why the MMC snap-ins are crashing ? What caused it, don't understand how a boot loader error could create such a problem.
Please give me some advice, need to solve this asap.

Thank you in advance.

I had the same kind of problem but only with the eventviewer snap-in. A simple reboot (despite the server was already restarted before) solved it but it might not help in your case.
Does the problem happens with every snap-in ?
Does it also happen when launching mmc and loading the snap-in ?

The machine.config is stored in the windows 2008 R2 Dvd, you can easily extract it using 7zip:
- Open with 7zip the windows 2008 R2 iso (if you have it in the iso format else go to the next step)
- Open the install.wim (stored in sources folder) with 7zip
- go to "1\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\" and you should find the file you need.

Thanks, extracted the file then moved to the right folder no changes still the same error, I don't know if a reboot is required but can't do it at the moment, users are working already.

1. Ran chkdsk - still the same error.
2. The In-Place Upgrade process failed too because the Users Directories is not on the same partition.
3. Tried to re-install .NET from an *.exe with no luck it has to be done from the Add Features in Server Manager, but as I said can't get to Server Manager because of the snap-in error.

I've just tested a few snap-ins and below are the ones that work (1) and the ones that doesn't work(2):

1:
Active Directory Users and Computers
Group Policy Editor
Performance Monitor
Services
System Configuration

2:
Computer Management
Security Configuration Monitor
Server Manager
Windows Firewall
Windows Server Backup

Don't know what to do, any help is highly appreciated.

Here is how my "machine.config" file looks like in "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG"

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<!--
Please refer to machine.config.comments for a description and
the default values of each configuration section.

For a full documentation of the schema please refer to
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=42127

To improve performance, machine.config should contain only those
settings that differ from their defaults.

If dotnet isn't needed for your server, you could try to remove it with the dotnet cleanup utility from MS and remove all dotnet > 2.0 as only 2.0 is integrated in 2008 R2. I hope this will help you to solve this.

Try to generate a crashdump of the MMC.exe:

http://msdn.microsof...v=vs.85%29.aspx

open it in WinDbg and look at the callstack. Do you see why it crashes?

I've uploaded the dump file to a file server, if smb has the time and willing to analyze it I'll be more than grateful.
