Is it possible to create an unattended installation of Windows XP which would be usable on multiple systems where the only question during install would be what the hostname should be?

Yes, in winnt.sif:

Remove ComputerName=

There is just one downside to defaulthide; when the page where the computername should be entered is displayed there is also the option to change the administrator password, instead I now use read only, which doesn't have this issue

I'll try that, but with ReadOnly the page is displayed without the option to change the password (it's greyed out), also I vaguely recall that when I used FullUnattended an autogenerated hostname is used.
Basically, 'I'll look into it and report back'

Well, it works as you said
, but instead of simply displaying the page it now displays it after the error that a computername is missing
, so I think I'll stick with ReadOnly
.
