I copied this from a 7200.11 SATA post, (I guess "THE" post). It came with a note saying "This belongs in it's own thread."

This is that thread.

Also, the diagram was wrong.

TX and RX have been swapped.

To make myself extremely clear - if you follow the diagram, you should connect the pin labelled TX in the diagram to the TX pin of your "computer" (I think we're all using USB-TTL UARTs these days).

This is the reverse to how one would normally do thing - i.e. connecting the TX of device A to the RX of device B.

I will also add, (because this was bugging me aswell), that it will work without any jumpers being set (i.e. the master jumper, which inconveniently shares the ground pin), and without a 40-pin connector.

Apply power to the drive, set serial port to 9600 8-n-1 (no flow control) and you should see this on bootup.

I would assume this apples to other PATA Seagate drives, YMMV.

... erm, and I just tried pressing ^Z and all I got was a lousy echo back. Well, I can't solve everything :P

... and this is what a quite broken drive (not clicking, but shaking and repeatedly trying to "catch" when starting up) outputs:

Well, looks like my TX does work... Not sure why it decided to work now, different drive, or different USB port... or just a shady 3rd party kext for my PL230x cable.

So, yes. Everything does work.

The ground cable fell out somewhere in the middle of this session, and it didn't seem to affect anything... although I wouldn't recommend trying that one at home.
