Question about rloew sata driver Rate Topic:

Can you install windows from an sata cd/dvd drive to a sata hard drive with rloew's driver? If so, do you need a floppy drive to load them?

Also, would I need the high capacity disk patch or is that only for pata drives?

OK... I just HAVE to chime in on the SATA CD/DVD issue.

I've seen this type of questions/conversation before and haven't spoken out.

I have a Dell Dimension E521, SATA-II ONLY (no PATA) and GCDROM does NOT work for DOS. You MUST use Dell's proprietary CD/DVD driver to get it to function. I had to SPECIFICALLY make a Boot Floppy just for it to get access to it.

If anyone needs the details for the file(s) and AUTOEXEC.BAT/CONFIG.SYS let me knwo... ONLY if all other methods fail, PLEASE.

Trust me, it was a real head-scratcher (did NOT work) and I used WinME to do it . I could double-check the Win98 out if need be, but the file(s) are the same. The reason for using WinME was because the HDD was/is SATA-II (apparently PATA-mode) and larger than standard Win98 useable.

If anyone else has done this WITHOUT using the proprietary driver (particularly for E521 nVidia nForce430 Chipset), feel free to correct me.

I had to yank the file(s) from the Boot Image (also available in a file on their FTP).

The "MSCDEX.EXE" was from the Boot Image and not sure what version/who made it since it's compressed with PKLITE and doesn't easily "unpack". Not really sure if it's proprietary or not.

Mine's Geforce6150LE(?) and "gcdrom.sys" specifically states

I have successfully used GCDROM on the one Computer that needed it. I have no idea about any other. There may be better solutions out there.
I later modded GCDROM so that it could be used with the SATA controller in RAID mode as this solved a separate issue.

@rloew - I had edited my post. It all depends on the chipset. Bear in mind that my E521 HDD is NOT set to AHCI AFAIK (only options are No RAID or RAID, apparently RAID-1 only) but the DVD (PC is ALL SATA-II) is NOT recognized in DOS without using the "special" Dell SYS-file. No "special" drivers seem to be needed (?) for the HDD connected (No RAID in BIOS) so must be AHCI=Off/PATA/IDE (?).

Notice that GCDROM.SYS hasn't been updated for a while to include ICH9/Newer-Intel or the Newer nVidia, whether AHCI or NOT, it's STILL attached to a SATA port and apparently NEEDS a CD/DVD driver for DOS. :wacko:

You should be so kind as to update that module for other users with this problem, since it appears that the source code is available (FreeDOS).

(Please note again that I nicked this stuff out of the Restore Boot Image for my E521 - wen NUCKIN FUTZ figuring out the problem of a basic independent DOS7.x floppy disk.)

AHCI is out of the question. It is NOT compatable with Windows 9X. There appears to be a Driver for AHCI in DOS called AHCI.SYS.
RAID Mode requires a modified GCDROM.SYS

I use AMD nearly exclusively, so I don't have any recent Intel Products to test any fixes on.

Please note that EXTCD.SYS has a default value of "EXTCD001" and I have used the MSCDEX.EXE (renamed) from the E521 Utilities CD Boot Images. BOTH of these files were "compressed" using PKLITE.

Side Note - I used an "I altered it" Windows ME EBD...
