I've reinstalled ie7, ie8, ie9; none will load even if the installation goes as far as asking to restart the pc.

Generally, I use firefox. But there is an application that requires IE. The IE add-on doesn't help. [similarly for Chrome]

Anti-virus is turned off and neither the 32 bit or 64 bit versions load.

Hotfix did not help. Tried to fix registry manually and ran into:
Mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
Subsequently, ran into cmdin.dll not found.

Windows XP only supports IE8, AFAIK.

That is not right. IE6 was released with XP, and updates to IE7 and IE8 have been officially available. I'm not positive that all 3 are supported by XP x64, but I think so. I'm not sure at all what the status is for IE9. It was not officially released for XP, but there may have been some tricks made to allow it to be used.

XP 64 did start with ie6.

IE9 is not supported at all on any xp..

IE8 for XP64 is supported by MS here: http://www.microsoft....aspx?id=14805.

The issue has nothing to do with which versions are supported. The setup programs run fine and the iexplore.exe files are where they belong.

And I noted that IE8 for Bing/MSN won't install without original IE8.
