Is there any better information logged in Event Viewer?

You can also look at the Windows Update Log, but beware it might be a large file.

For me, it helps (in most problems with WU on XP and 7) if I delete the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\ (especially DataStore.edb) and C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ and then restart wuauclt.exe.

@Tripedacus - Thank you on a very useful link.

YOu get a timeout:

8024401C = WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_REQUEST_TIMEOUT

//
// MessageId: WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_REQUEST_TIMEOUT
//
// MessageText:
//
// Same as HTTP status 408 - the server timed out waiting for the request.

it is a server issue. Try again later.
