Aero Glass for Win8 RC4

2,631 posts in this topic

I have updated the first post with link to download preview version. Be aware that it is preview only and has been compiled for 64-bit system (32-bit version will come later). Tested under VMWare.

It may contain many bugs. It has not been optimized at all. I have not cared about unused resources cleanup etc. It has not been tested much, it is just a "hey, it works!" :-)

for me it doesn't work under VMware. The screen gets black after starting the launcher. I think is it related to the RP Theme which I'm using in the RTM.

// edit

also doesn't work with the RTM theme. This time I also got a blackscreen and 1s later I'm at the login screen. There is no log file created.

I guess it is the problem we were talking about that you was logged off when dwm is killed (it's what the loader does). Could you try disabling your video adapter in Device Manager before launching the loader?

this is NOT allowed! Debug versions are not redistributable.

makes no difference. I have the blackscreen again with only the mouse pointer.

Which vmware do you use? I use the Player 5.0.1

Does it display "This is preview" dialog before?

I have VMWare 5.0.1 build-894247, Windows 8 Pro N x64. Only Visual Studio 2012 installed, else completely clean system.

I use the same vmware version and yes, I see the dialog. After clicking ok, I get the blackscreen.

But I've check my DWM.exe and I can see that it already had an update to version 6.2.9200.16420. Do you use the vanilla RTM without any updates?

Also, I forgot that I have UAC disabled - if it makes difference.

Could you try this version http://leteckaposta.cz/223020690 and then run DWMLoader with parameter "-donotrestartdwm" (without quotes). Then restart video adapter in device manager.

yes, I always run with UAC on (highest slider level).

With the parameter, I can see the cmd Window of the loader and that it installed the hook. When I now try to enable the Vmware GPU again in device manager I get the blackscreen

If you kill the exe, the suer is logged off :(

Nice Freudian slip! :thumbup At least it points to how many of us feel about Microsoft taking out glass!

I was thinking the same thing and then saw your post!

NO, they're not. Use Internet Explorer instead of Chrome or Chromium. I encountered errors trying to download the files using those browsers.

Just like everyone else, have a nearly vanilla build of Windows 8 Pro x64 (without updates) with only VS2012 Express installed for the runtimes in VMWare Workstation 9.0.1, and running the program gives me a black screen, even with disabled UAC via CMD. Why does Windows 8's DWM have to be unbelievely unstable??? I hope this issue is resolved soon since I have hope this will be a quality program once finished. :)

Maybe a repackage could be done? You can actually copy the requried VC runtime files into the program folder, you don't need to install the actual debug runtime on your system.

That said, I tried it out and it did nothing! No black screen, no error messages either. It just came up with the message that it was a test, and once I clicked okay the screen went blank for a fraction of a second, but when it came back up there wasn't any chance.
