Best Sync Software Free

Hi guys!

Just wondering what is the most reliable sync software that is freeware?

I will look at pay versions if anyone is recommending a particular one?

I hate sorting through files to back up and automating the process.

What worries me most is the fact of erasing files - especially ones that are done in illustrator etc that take hours to create......help...lol

Scenario

I have a directory on the left that is to back up to the directory on the right.

Some times I rearange folders on the left - changing names etc - what is the best way to sync in this situation so that I don't lose anything on the right ; but it still reflects the directory on the left with my Changes.

In effect - even though I have moved and renamed directories I don't lose any files....

Please feel free to comment...lol

You all know me by now....:blushing:

This software is a little too basic for what I was looking for..

Please describe the feature(s) that you need (or that you think you need) and that is not among the ones of zback:

FEATURES:

- portable - no installation needed - just unzip to any directory on a fixed or removable drive

- there is also version with installer available from homepage

- works from USB stick, does not write to the registry

- backup/ synchronize to local drives or network computers (LAN)

- Unicode support for foreign characters in file names

- support for files larger then 4 GB

- copy modes: update files, refresh existing files, mirror source to target, synchronize, dated backup and restore

- filter files based on extension, size, date, subdirectories, only new or existing files

- keep multiple versions of backup files

- include/ exclude specific directories

- preview and execute operation

- automatic generation of batch scripts for routine backups

- simple, manual, batch or command line operation

- single batch script may contain many backup and sync jobs

- using scripting you may backup to multiple locations or backup from multiple locations to single backup location

- scheduling for batch operation - you may set job repetition interval and auto-run when overdue

- verify copied files

- for easy access, you can make Zback desktop icon from Options tab

- drag and drop support from Windows Explorer

- small size

- personal freeware

Hi jaclaz!

Sorry! You have a good point.....:blushing:

I was being a little too hasty in my assumption that it was too simple....Like you posted....most functions one can want it is just testing it that I need to do....

Thanks for putting me right

Hi again!

Still on the subject of backing up files etc....

Please tell me if I am asking for the moon....lol

Over the time I have probably backed up files when stressed and not thought about how many copies I have of a particular file, document etc....Is there a way to automate a search that looks for files that are duplicates and gives me the opportunity of erasing them to save space and get order?

If a basic one would do....;)

Didn't see the feature in the given DuplicateFileFinder to delete duplicates.

This one does a similar function and provides for deletions.

In any case, your needs are to eliminate dups after being "found".

Thx, jaclaz, for the link... :thumbup

Sure, that's why I tagged is as "basic" ;).

It' called DuplicateFileFinder and not DuplicateFileFinderAndDeleter

:angel

However the approach used by Coderforlife is particularly interesting as it allows very fast "matching" :thumbup .

BTW, on NTFS filesystems and IF filename remained the same, this is also fastish (but of course only partially answers the OP question):

(there are several tools similarly based on direct $MFT parsing):
