ive just got dsl and i got a wireless router and card to go along with it. the router is mr814v2 and card is ma311 both NetGear. i got both computers to be able to have internet fine but the networking part is not working right.
ive never networked before so not sure what todo. ive done the create a network wizard stuff. on the computer with the wireless card it shows its own shares in "my network places" but does not show mine. on this computer it doesnt show anything in my network places. i read that sometimes zonealarm may be the problem so ive uninstalled it and still nothing in my network places. ive rebooted. ive tried everything i can think of. if i goto the router it shows both computers as connected. i know the other puter is working fine because it gets the internet fine.

both computers are running winxp pro. using zonealarm. (zonealarm is still installed on wireless computer)

anyhelp would be appreciated if you need more info please ask!

iam lost :)

I'm assuming that your router is running as a DHCP, so your IP settings should be ok.

Have you setup any shares on the folders that you want to share??

Is file and printer sharing setup?? (found in the properties of your network connections)

I don't use Zonealarm but usually you have to enable the network card/wireless card to use the network, not totally sure on that, have to ask someone with zonealarm.

yes its running DHCP (i dont know what that means but i know i seen it there somewhere)

yes there is share on both computers. the main wired computer has shares (can see the hand red thing under folder that i shared on) but does not show anything in network places, and wireless computer has shares that i can see in the my network places folder also with the share folder listed with what computer is shareing it beside it, which is the same computer. does not see wired computer share.

just got done messin with it for awhile and now i lost internet connection through it. did the reset to factory and still no internet. i had to unhook the router and hook dsl modem straight to computer just to get online again.

uhhgg the joys of computers :|

edit: got router to get me online again .. had to shut it all down waited a few minutes then fired it all back up and back online atleast..

can you check if file and printer shareing is setup on both computers??

(click start, click Network Connections, right click your LAN/Wireless connection, and click properties, if installed you should see it along with a few others client for microsoft netowrks, internet prototcol, etc)

also can check your ipconfig on both compuetrs and post the results here ??

(click start, click run, type cmd, hit enter, type ipconfig /all, hit enter)

Couple of things you can try....

From the sharing computer (The WIRED computer with the printer shared),click "START" and then run.
When the run window opens, type "\\HOMER" without the quotes. This is to ensure you can actually see the share on the network. If your are able to see the printer you have shared, try the same command from the wireless computer. If you cannot, verify the share settings on the printer are set to "Everyone".

If you do not get name resolution from the wireless PC, try entering \\192.168.0.2 instead of the PC name.

if i do the \\homer on the homer computer the shares come up but if i do the other computer it says "network not found" and vice versa for the other computer. they do not see each other. if i do the cmd , ping to each other they do get a response though.

Here are a couple of things to try...they have fixed similar problems for me.

Enable NetBios. Lan/wireless properties>IP properties>Advanced button>WINS tab>Either choose Default or Enable under NetBios Setting. Try this on both machines and try navigating my network places again. You may need to restart.

Try running the Network setup wizard on both pcs. Make sure to select the same workgroup and restart. See if that helps.

Hope it helps. Later.

Check and make sure that you do not have the native Windows XP firewall enabled on either computer. Nine times out of ten, this is the problem.

You are correct that NetBios should be disabled. I have found that I sometimes need to enable it to see another computer or for them to see me correctly. Since you are behind a router and running ZA, enabling netbios isn't as dangerous. Mine is enabled and I have never had problems.

just to let you know it was the netbios that was stopping the share from working. thanks a ton for everyone that responded in here and helped out. this isnt the only forum i went to for help but i still consider it the best, especially since you solved my problem.. at first i thought i messed up my uninttended install.

thanks ljone2!!
