Those universal VESA drivers don't even always implement DirectDraw, so stuff like OpenGL and D3D are very unlikely to be supported.

Try Mesa3D. It is OpenGL>GDI wrapper.

Any chance of getting the issues with windowed DOS Boxes addressed? They seem to work on some machines but not on others... :angel

+1!!!

Windowed DOS Boxes are a very deeply integrated part of the day-to-day use for serious 9Xers...

That was the main reason I've not adopted VBEMP 9X as the default for my installations on newer hardware, up to now.

I wasn't aware, however, that there is some hardware in which those issues do not manifest themselves.

Please LC, do elaborate on it...

OTOH, I must say that VBEMP 9X brings fresh air galore to the currently somewhat still atmosphere of the 9X/ME scene... :D

So... thank you a whole lot, Bearwindows! :thumbup   You do rock! worship.gif

In order to give a more precise explanation I would have to go back and retest some of the hardware setups I used during some driver testing I did recently... but to make a long story short, I was doing extensive tests under Windows 95. Several of the systems I used had no Windows 95 drivers and in those cases I sometimes ran VBE9X to escape 640x480x16.

If I am remembering correctly, at one point I had two machines with video cards that have official Windows 98/ME drivers but no 95 drivers, these being an ATI Radeon 9800 XT and an ATI Radeon X800 Pro. The Radeon X800 Pro system would not run DOS Boxes in windowed mode without crashing with VBE9X, while the Radeon 9800 XT system was able to run DOS Boxes in windowed mode without issues. There may have been another instance of this but my memory is fuzzy at the moment and I only noted these things in passing as I was concentrating on the driver being tested.. also I didn't have much hope that VBE9X would be further updated but I am very pleased to find I was wrong!

Thanks for the swift reply, LC! And for the interesting info (so far, all the -- few -- tests I had conducted resulted in problems with the DOS boxes...) :thumbup

I never had any issues with DOS boxes on any of my hardware with this driver, and key thing is I pretty much only use Ati video cards. 7x00, 9x00, X300 and X550

JFYI, Exists an unofficial build of proprietary SciTechSoft SNAP Graphics 3.1.8 for Windows 9x dated by ~ autumn 2006.

If supports a lot of video hardware, I took 3 major ones of them, for example,

1) Intel Graphics - Intel 910G, 915G, 945G, G96x and mobile versions

2) AMD (former ATI) - Ati Radeon Xyyy, Xyyyy series, including mobile ones

3) NVIDIA - Geforce 7 Series, including mobile ones

Note that these chips does not have official drivers for Windows9x line from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA.

SNAP Driver provide

1) DirectDraw acceleration, video overlay support, color keying etc.

2) Option to add any custom resolutions on the fly, including widescreen

3) No problems with DOS box, either fullscreen or windowed

4) Dual-head and rotation support

5) Software OpengGL 1.x support

It is a good option to replace VBEMP for some supported chips.

Full list of supported chips:

That that build is existing is good, but the question  is:

Is it - besides existing - also available?

If YES , Where from?

If NO  , this represents what we highly specialized technicians call "senseless teasing"

Not so much. It worked in the past... and it's fixed, now, for the time being... :w00t:

Well, if that is the actual target of the reference that bearwindows made, I would guess that Tihiy would - if asked for it - re-upload it somewhere.

oops  :blushing:  I see it was fixed :) in the meantime.

AFAIK, that's Tihiy's mod of the actual target of the reference that bearwindows made. And the link is alive again...

I don't know.

Bearwindows said "it exists an unofficial build", it is very possible (knowing Tihiy's abilities in tweaking things) that Bearwindows was making reference (vaguely) to that specific unofficial build by Tihiy.

I don't think so, because of the following small -- but significant -- detail:

;***********************************************************************
; Info file for SciTech SNAP Graphics Windows 95/98/Me Display Driver
;
; Copyright (c) 1998-2006 SciTech Software, Inc. All rights reserved.
;***********************************************************************

...whereas the same file in Tihiy's pack says:

; Info file for SciTech SNAP Graphics Windows 95/98/Me Display Driver
;
; Copyright (c) 1998-2003 SciTech Software, Inc. All rights reserved.

Yep, on the other hand, the post by Tihiy was made in October 2008, and the files in it are modified in various dates before that, among them a few do bear dates of September and October 2006 (i.e. compatible with the "vague" reference  "dated by ~ autumn 2006" bearwindows made).

As said I don't know.

Here's another possible reference... transverse, but it has the right date in it...

Hello!
It seems that the latest beta (3.1.3) of Scitech SNAP supports
i915GM chipset ...

I'm still figuring out how to unpack the installer and install this thing manually, since I have a system with a 945GM but they only want to support 945G. I want to force the 945G drivers on it, I think it should work fine since the two are very similar. (It says "unsupported chipset" when run). There already is a modded Scitech SNAP Graphics video driver that supports the Intel 910G(ML), 915G, 945G, among other video chipsets, around the net, it seems.
