Computer will not boot

Ok that all worked jus the way you said it would. Now that I have it back is there something I can do to cleanup all this junk on here. He was expecting a restore so as long as I can keep the office I could wipe him down to almost nothing.

No, as said a "complete restore" (i.e. a "factory restore") will set the PC exactly as it was in factory, no user data, no added after programs, nothing.

There is not - AFAIK - a simple way to backup "selectively" the Microsoft Office install (BTW which version?) and later restore it.

That kind of programs need to be (re-) installed, but you (or your son) should have the actual media from which the Office was installed originally.

There are tools that allow to recover/save the install "key" (which is needed at install time (if you have lost it) but you need the install media.

If the MS Office is not one of the latest versions (2007, 2010 or 2013) it can be usually found used for a small amount of money.

On the other hand, if it is a 2007, 2010 or 2013 you can download for free a copy of the install:

http://office.about.com/od/Instructions/ss/Download-And-Order-Office-2010-Backup-Copy.htm

http://www.office.com/backup

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/download-back-up-restore-microsoft-office-products-FX103427465.aspx

You will need the actual product key.

BTW, one should always have (or create) the install media for anything that is actually on the PC, and BTW, you should also create (like *NOW*) the recovery CD/DVD from the recovery partition, so that if something like this (but more serious) happens again, you have a way out:

Not quite OT, but you can also find a legitimate download of Vista that you can use either the "internal" key or the COA key if you want to get really radical and "start from scratch". Google

"vista home" "service pack 2" iso download -torrent

You'll find a link directly to DigitalRiver files much like you can find legitimate Windows7 ones. You MUST have a valid key.

Go jaclaz' route though to keep in line with the Vendor's setup because if you go the "radical" route you can never go back to the OEM way without more hassle than it may be worth to you. -OR- you could follow the "get the keys" and the associated ISO files, "Recover to Factory" the current setup (not even making the CD's/DVD's), get another appropriate HDD, and start from scratch, thus tucking away the "Factorey Restored" HDD for whatever reason. (Side note if you decide this, after Recovery, do NOT reboot, but shut down - that's the way YOU would have received it when purchased, providing New User Name and all).

Warning - You get to "create" the Recovery CD/DVD set JUST ONCE and never again.

Assuming you want to keep the current HDD (and OEM Install/Crapware), ignore this.

Well, NO

Not NO to everything, but almost so ;).

If you google for:

"vista home" "service pack 2" iso download -torrent

you will find tens of downloads for the actual Service Pack 2, tens of "debatable" downloads and maybe 1 (one) link to the "legitimate" Digitalriver files.

In case they are listed here:

http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/57-windows-vista-direct-download-links

I doubt that such a thing as Vista  with integrated SP2 files exist on DigitalRiver.

But of course one can always update "normally" to the SP2.

I would never (personally) advice a "common user" to install a "standard" Vista  on a large OEM laptop (like the Gateway) as it is very likely that it will become a drivers quest more than anything else.

Cannot say if the Gateway's have the same provision as HP's (one time creation of recovery media only), it is possible that there is not such a limitation. In the case of the HP's the once only can be easily re-armed.

The "restore without making CD/DVD's first can of course be done, but it is IMNSHO "pure nonsense", in some cases, if something goes wrong, the PC may not boot again to the recovered system and not to the WinRE and you would be stuck.

I did not go any further with removing anything from this computer.

However last night he was on it and it shut down on him twice. Everything just goes black. It is not a battery issue cause it has a full charge.

Any idea what I can look at now? He leaves for school on Saturday and I am hoping he will have a computer.

Those kind of "sudden" blanks can be due to several reasons.

First thing it must be checked if the PC actually shuts down or just the screen becomes blank.

On (aging) laptops it is quite common that the cooling duct and/or fan is clogged with dirt/hairs/dust, etc. and this can cause some serious scarce cooling that makes thermal protection shut off the thingy.

Another common cause (much more serious) if the PC is NOT shut off is overheating of just the Video card, which can cause the video go "blank", the solution here is still that of cleaning the cooling ducts and fan, but there may have been "permanent" damages to the video card BGA

A third common cause is the little switch that turns off the LCD when you close the lid (this is easy, it's just a matter of cleaning it with some electrical contacts spray).

And a fourth one is the actual inner video cable, it is not so infrequent that by opening and closing the lid for hundreds or thousands of times the connector on the "keyboard side" gets loose and makes false contacts or one of the wires in the cable itself is "stretched".

Try to reproduce the issue.

Check if the PC is actually shut off or not.

Check how hot it is when this happens (and/or if it happens when you use heavily the motherboard CPU and/or graphic card CPU, like - as an example - playing a "heavy demanding" game).

See if you add some "extra cooling", like one of those stands with fans, the problem disappears or happens more rarely.

Try connecting to it an external monitor screen and verify the behaviour is the same.

Inspect the cooling duct and fan, clean them.

It is actually shutting down and I checked the fan yesterday but it does not look like it is too bad.

Well, define in this (accurate ;)) scale:

  1. warm
  2. hottish
  3. very hot
  4. d@mn hot
  5. scolding

how you would describe the feeling when you feel the underside of the laptop immediately after the shut down occurs?

Also observe if it shuts down when it is "idle" (say with just the screensaver running) or if it happens only (or quicker) when the CPU or GPU are heavily in use.

Normally any "software" induced (and most of the "hardware" induced) faults would result in a BSOD, and/or a "freeze" and not in a shut down.

Do check anyway the event logs to see if there is anything "strange" in them.

Check also thoroughfully the zillion settings for "hybernation", "sleep", "power saving", etc.

Still along the idea that it is a "thermal shutdown", I have seen more than one laptop where in factory some "low cost" thermal pads are used (as opposed to good thermal paste) on the processor and *somehow* these thermal pads, aging, seem to loose some of their heat conductive capabilities.

I would say hottish.

It is shutting down in the middle of use.

How do I check the event logs?

Yep, but unfortunately there is not enough details in such a copy/paste.

Ideally you should:

  1. Save existing logs to a backup copy.
  2. Delete the "current" logs.
  3. Restart the machine (having the machine not connected to *anything* like network, external devices, WiFi, etc.)
  4. Wait until the shutdown issue happens again
  5. Restart the machine and copy the event logs to (say) a USB stick
  6. Compress the logs in a .zip file
  7. Attach the zip file to your next post or upload it to *any* file sharing site and post the link to it.

A "complete" cycle of the System log should "normally" start with event log 6009 (start of the OS):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.2&EvtID=6009&EvtSrc=EventLog&LCID=1033

followed by a 6005 (event log started):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.2&EvtID=6005&EvtSrc=EventLog&LCID=1033

and end with eventlog

6006 (event log stopped):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.2&EvtID=6006&EvtSrc=EventLog&LCID=1033

Remember that there are three "main" event logs:

  1. Application
  2. Protection
  3. System
