Hi, im making a Windows XP and 2003 2in1 CD, but im kinda stuck with space with only 30mb space left (not sure of the exact values)
I did use gosh's source method but id like to cut down on some more size so i was thinking of the drivers.cab file, has anyone ever tried extracting both driver.cabs to the same directory and overwriting the 2003 files with the XP files?
Youd save about 70mb which means i can probably fit in some updates or 98se..
Just wondering will it cause any problems and if Windows XP drivers are the same as 2003 drivers and visa versa?

Actually I always wondered if the driver.cab files were interchangable. Being that 2003 is "newer" than XP I would try using 2003s' driver.cab in XP. It might work, but I wouldn't be supprised if it causes problems. But it's definitely worth a shot:
Take the current working CD you have now and copy it to your hard drive. Overwrite XP's driver.cab file with the one from 2003. Use cdimage.exe to create a new ISO, it will see the 2 driver.cab files are the same - and optimize the CD so that the same data is used for both driver.cab files. Thus, you saved about 70MB and have updated XP's driver.cab file to boot.
Let us know if it works.

Even if i do a test like that, i still cant say for sure... Reason being diffrent hardware uses diffrent drivers. What might work in my VMware might not work on every other PC. Ill give it a shot, but first ill have to find out again were to disable the windows file protection stuff.
Ill tell you guys my results in a few hours.

argh damnit well it doesnt work...
Get the error: Setup cannot copy the file: cdaudio.sys
But then it doesnt ruin the chance that if you extract XP into a directory in the desktop and then extract 2003 in the same directory and simply overwrite the files. Youll also have a bigger driverdatabase then...
Cant be bothered going thru all that again right now so maybe tommorow

You're forgetting that driver.cab's files are digitally signed by nt5.cat, which is different for each OS. Combining the cabs would result in files being unsigned, and version conflicts. You could try using server 2003's driver.cab, drvindex.inf, and nt5.cat for both os', but that might not work.
You really shouldn't have any space problems, each os should only be 300 megs. I've made a cd with win2k and xp before and it fit.

yep i dont have any problems with size. Id just like to squeeze in that extra few mb's for software updates and perhaps windows 98 aswell or BartPE
Otherwise i can fit them both onto 1 cdr
Ill try what you just said tommroow.
btw gosh you have great tutorials and i love your site
