I'm trying to network a 2003 machine with my xp machine. The computers dont seem to see each other. Does anyone have a guide on how to network these two.

Can they ping each other?

Are all your firewalls temporarily disabled in your attempts to network both machines?

The problem was zonealarm on the 2003 machine. Both machines can see each other now. The only problem is, when sharing files, the speeds are very very slow. When I have the xp machine connected to another xp, the speeds are very fast when sharing files. Is there a setting in 2003 which limits bandwidth?

Make sure Windows 2003 has up-to-date network card drivers, and is set to Auto-negotiate network speed.

the network card (which is VIA Rhine II onboard) is up to date
auto negotiation on the network card was active. i changed it to 100basetx and it was still the same

any other possible fixes/resaons for this issue?

oh also, we have a win2k and another server2k3 working fine on the same network with the xp machine. the difference between the server2k3 that works and the one that doesnt work is that the one that works is standard. could it be that theres a problem becuase the one that doesnt work is enterprise edition?
