I'm on a university network & I've only been using my laptop (no base unit) since the year began. I signed up for broadband and I had to fill in this for in which I had to put my ethernet card's physical address. I have just got a new base unit which I also wanted to set the broadband up on. I can't get the broadband to work so have they tied my ethernet address up to my room connection so that I only have one computer running it? (I guess they would do that to stop loads of people running broadband from one room?) :)

If they are tying the connection to a particular phyiscal adress, you could buy a router to hook up both coputers then call the ISP and tell them you bought a new network card and need to register a new physical adress and give them the physical adress of the WAN port of the router.

You can possibly do this by spoofing the MAC Address, but don't know of any Windows tools to do this.

I've been to my friend's campus and they have this technician's office where the staff registers each students' details and room number to their computer so that the internet is available in their rooms.
I don't think they need to give their MAC address or anything like that though.

You'll need to speak to the admins in your campus, they'll be able to advice you in what to do.
Have you tried swapping the ethernet cards around? Maybe they are only allowing access using the MAC addresses.

hey guys, thanks for all your posts. I just got an email saying that under terms & conditions we are only allowed one comp in each room to be on the broadband connection. I want to connect the computers up anyhow because all my files & stuff are on the laptop, including stuff which would not be possible to put on CD and copy because they are simply too large. Is it possible to still connect the computers for files sharing without the internet connection being shared too?

If you have Windows XP, then you should be fine just connecting the ethernet cable to the two machines instead of the wall socket.
You should be able to see the other machine from your laptop without having to setup anything.

Start > Help and Support Center > Networking and the Web > Home ans Small Office Networking > Using the Network Setup Wizard

The Network Setup Wizard is your friend. It has sample network configurations with nice pictures and will have you connected in very little time.

I just wanted to chime in and say, that the University rulesets are all ill conceived in my opinion. Also Welcome back

No need to use the wizard once a network connection has been setup already.
Just need to plug the cables into machine. :)

i've done this b4 with a router.(i'm in university as well with same rules, well worse rules)
just get the router and the physical adress u're talking about is probably the mac adress. so when u get the router go to the configuration and change the mac adress. and u should be able to use the router with no problems....

(btw smac is a great app)

and if not get another network card for either computer.
enable internet connection sharing. and it should work.
my laptop has 2 network cards (1 onboard, 1 pcmcia) i can do many things!!

also when u get another ethernet card with the internet connection wizard u can set it so that the 2nd pc won't have internet, but no point in that :) bc they won't be looking at shared stuff. once your computer is connected u can share it with billions of computers

if u share internet 192.168.0.1 will be your ip for your 2nd ethernet card (well the wizard automatically does that...) and other comp can have an ip 192.168.0.2~255 ....

I tried the cat 5 ehternet connection, I could see that it found my laptop (named Wilson after Castaway awww...) on the screen but it wouldn't let me have access to it. so I've got a type A to type A USB so I can use that to fileshare without the worry of connecting to the net through the laptop...next stop new graphics card.....

To get on a cable network you need to provide a mac address for security... as you did.

Now, im on the internet using my Pc that has a network card in it thats not had its Mac adress registered with my ISP.

Infact... the card that im using the mac address for is plugged into one of my other PC's that hasnt got a HDD at the moment and isnt running. How?

Easy... in my router config page i can tell my router to spoof any mac addy i want and it does the job brilliantly!

Get a router and share your connection between the machines in your room more securely and also as far as the outside network is concerned... you are using one PC on one Mac address. (the addy you put on the form)

My router is a Netgear RP614 V2 Cable router. Its got some great features and is one of those things i never realised i really needed till i got it, after that i wondered what i did without it and consider it one of the best investments ive made for my PC... because unlike Processors or Graphics cards, it will be valid technology for time to come and im not likley to see it on the shop shelf in a months time at a 3rd of the price i paid for it!

i got mine (and a friends) from www.overclockers.co.uk for £45

had some minor problems with upnp with some games. fixed after a firmware update. but i think netgear might be better...
