Office Shrinker [reduce source of o2k3/xp/2k]

Well there needs to be an error message before anything gets copied.

That is how the program works. so if there arnt any error messages poping up there is another problem.

Make sure that you are waiting long enough.

Try the new file. I included some microsoft logging so i can try to figure out where the problem lies. For office 2k3 it will create 3 log files.

Hope i can get this figured out!!!!

Thanks for bearing with me :)

@farte: Ok i looked at your log and everythign seems to be running fine except:

C:\office\FILES\WINDOWS\HELP\WZCNFLCT.CHM

Make sure that the file exists in your sourece directory. I cant see why else it wouldnt work. Everything else is good. So check to see that:

C:\Documents and Settings\frankie\Desktop\apps\Office2003\FILES\WINDOWS\HELP\WZCNFLCT.CHM

exists. I would try rerunning with the same source and target directories to see if it stops on the same file.

You could also copy the file over manually if the shrink doesnt catch it, but let me know so i can see if i can fix it.

Anybody else having it stop abruptly??

@Herb_Davis_Y2K: Thanks man you log was very helpful. I think i was able to fix most of the problem that you all were having.

@farte: Give the new one a try i think that it will work for you

Im sorry that you made a new admin point with a new mst file. That wasnt the problem. im sure your origional was fine.

I fixed the problem of it stopping in the middle.

Keep me up to date with any other problems.

shrink48 works with Office2k3 but it stops 10 times before it completed all files (for my setup).

I needed to re-run shrink so it can continue, it was reporting like installation ended, but it was prematurelly.

Anywayz here are the logs so if they can help you.

I'm allready happy, it's 40MB smaller then my "manual" shrinkage...thanx !

@farte: Ok after looking at your log. Office installed. So im thinking that your target directory already contains all of the files that it needs to install office.

Another thing... Do you already have office installed?

because if you do this will not work, you must have a clean version of windows to run this from.

Here man

Hope you have a good weekend

@farte, with installed Excel, Word, Outlook and newest updates its 125 office + 15MB updates...all compressed with 7zip in self-extracting unattended installation makes that 47MB !

@squallgreg, this script/proggy is reading from installation only needed files and copies them separatelly for specific msp file.

In order to enduce installation you need to uninstall office but even then some system files will be allready installed and next time you reinstall windows you'll need to run shrink one more time to fill up the holes.

@nuhi: Thanks for clarifying for everybody else

im gonna try to figure out how to fix it so that you dont have to run it 5 times inorder for all of the files to be copied.

@buckeyeXP, it seems that it stops only after bigger files are being copied and when it waits to long for automatic "retry".

Small files are warping without any problem, as long as retry window don't wait to long.

Maybe some latency that you put for waiting next file, and if there is none (or waiting to long) it thinks that it's over ?

@nuhi >> ok thanx. But I still dont understand why office must be uninstalled. That means, you must run shrink right after installing windows (to be sure it will "shrink" it right), then make your unattend office CD and reinstall everything. Am I right ?

Well, I wanted to make a full unattend guide for office 2003 (admin point + splistream + mst + shrink) for newbies in french... I think its too difficult for them now !

@squallgreg, yes, that's about right, because some runtimes being left behind even after uninstallation.

Maybe there can be a solution provided by you, just reinstall windows and make notes which directories are needed, i think they were mainly in MSShared folder...then it will not be difficult to instruct them to copy that after shrinking.

(of course there was some other folders but i bet they are standard for every installation)

edit: maybe this is buckeyeXP's job :)

Reinstall windows and run shrinked copy of office, it will report missing files, then you see in which directories they are in.

Or use VirtualPC or VMWare like me.

Well managed to shrink to 169 mb which is fantastic that was word, outlook, powerpoint and exel ..... lots of errors messages but stills stops during installation

@nuhi how did you go about compressing them never used 7zip shrink.....would be greatful if you know where i could do that with winrar.... did you need switches to self extract before installing office...

cheers

@farte, Winrar is easier and you only gain couple of mb using 7zip.

Make a batch file with notepad, lets say setup.cmd containing unattended command for installation of office, mine is:

start setup.exe TRANSFORMS=setup.mst /qb-

(where setup.mst is your mst file)

Make self-extracting exe with winrar and go to sfx-advanced options, set it up to run a batch file (setup.cmd) after decompresion in temporary folder(there is an option for that).

And set it up to overwrite files and hide start dialog.

Now you should have one exe file which installs office with just double clicking it.

ok sorry guys i have been really busy the last couple of weeks. But i think i have found a solution to the problem of it quiting prematurely. i will try to have that up by the end of the week. things are hetic around here.

@squallgreg: Also if you want me to try to make it work with a non clean version of windows maybe you could do some tests and compair the logs to see what files need to be copied. The only thing is that it would not work if office was already installed at one point, because updated file are different.

I've had rather spotty results extracting to a temp folder. I've had more than one occasion where the files get deleted before setup is finished. Rather annoying :)
