how to get Windows Server 2003 x86 post SP2 updates?

Hi.

I'm using nLite on my Windows Server 2003 x86 SP2.
But I don't know how to get the post SP2 updates so I can integrate them.
I tested in VirtualBox with Windows Update and there are 134 high priority updates. But it's not that easy searching and downloading each of them manually + some may not work in their original form in nLite.
I tried with WSUS: it downloads a lot of files (202, not counting IE*) but when I'm trying to integrate them it shows some strange errors.

Can somebody help me with this, please...?
Thank you.

Regards, DavidB

Thank you for the suggestion.

I found this

But there are 2 problems:

- it's almost a month old;

- it's in "one piece" with all updates, not just the high priority ones. That means you can't remove one or more of them.

But I don't want to install all normal/low priority updates. For example .Net, Adobe Flash Player, MSXML, Windows Search and so on.

Compare Updates to this -

http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/UpdateLists.aspx

They can be opened with 7-Zip

The list is not definitive (look at date).

It appears that nobody is keeping Server 2003 lists updated.

You could also maybe try AutoPatcher, but they stopped on it too.

You could also try WSUS Offline Updater.

There's also something called Portable Updater.

All are listed here - http://www.raymond.cc/blog/offline-windows-update/

edit - Also look here -

http://www.vorck.com/windows/hotfixes_2003.html

Seems to be relatively up-to-date.

I think I found it :angel:D . Seriously, in 3 weeks an up to date pack will also be "almost a month old". Also the guy has done all the work for you, why be so picky ?

"Picky"? Maybe a little :D, but for a good reason.
I intend to use this installation for years. One thing I noticed on any OS: more changes you'll make after installation, faster it will "break". That's why I'm using nLite in the first place and that's why I want to be up to date as much as possible.
Probably in a few days he will release a new version.

Or I can download the updates from the last few weeks manually and add them in nLite's GUI after his update pack...

But that's only half of the problem: as I mentioned there are some updates I don't want. For a few of them (.Net and Adobe Flash Player) I found how to disable them (in the guy's topic). But even so I'm not 100% sure some of their files won't be copied into the installation anyway.
"Picky" here too? Again maybe a little, but again for a good reason. Any OS is faster and stabler if it's kept as simpler as possible (sorry if my english is not so good). That means removing everything it's not needed, including those files/folders.

Later edit: something like this, but for Server 2003, would be great :)

Well, it doesn't work well with my nLite configuration. Oh, and sorry for the double post.

First, it showed me this error:

post-384434-0-04181600-1389336321_thumb.

But I deactivated the antivirus and it was gone.

But each time I start Windows it says:

post-384434-0-42458000-1389336320_thumb.

The event viewer:

post-384434-0-13352100-1389336322_thumb.

post-384434-0-60200200-1389336322_thumb.

I made an experiment: from the updates downloaded by WSUS I erased all that could cause problems. After the installation the only problem is that the manual update using IE and update.microsoft.com doesn't work anymore. It's just searching without stopping...
You'll notice from Last session.ini that the Automatic update service it's stopped but the manual update should of worked anyway.

According to one of the last threads in the XP forum, it's a problem caused by Microsoft, not by nLite.

Ok, but the problem is I can't find the Server 2003 versions for these:

Needed for Windows Update Filename / Download Link Bulletin KB Article Description WindowsXP-KB892130-ENU-x86.exe KB892130 Windows Genuine Advantage Validation v1.9.42.0 WindowsUpdateAgent7.6.7600.256.cab [1] KB949104 Windows Update Engine v7.6.7600.256 WindowsXP-KB898461-x86-ENU.exe KB898461 Installs a permanent copy of the Package Installer for Windows

Could you help me find them, please...?

Nope! You only need to create/integrate the -latest- Windows Update Agent. The others are irrelevant. The whole "Windows Updtae" process has changed so the OLD version no longer (correctly) works.

See this -

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157027-windows-update-agent-which-version-do-you-have/

Also this (v256) -

http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/9907-repak-windows-update-agent-767600256/

And this (v257 - the ABSOLUTE latest) for both WU+MU (scroll down) -

http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8441&start=250

Alternative is to use up some some disk-space/bandwidth and use the UDC link (xdot-tk) given in the Topic above and run it. It will create the add-on for you that you can use in nLite.

I do NOT endorse using "pre-packaged" ones. If you know how to edit a BAT-script, use -X-' UDC script and remove all BUT the WU part. The first link (read through it) gives the basis for the UDC script.

What you read in that link you were directed to (following) is kind of a potpourri and the info provided by one poster (re - "3 updates needed") are, IMHO, incorrect (see post #12 for why), ESPECIALLY if you use nLite for the Integrations.

Ok.

I tried adding only WindowsUpdateAgent7.6.7600.256.cab containing WUA.exe

Same problem:

post-384434-0-33397000-1389407325_thumb.

I noticed Wuapi.dll was missing. But if I start directly WUA.exe it says it's already installed.

Then I tried an "online" Update Agent script, found on this board. It downloaded and installed WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86-7.6.7600.256-257.exe,

This time Wuapi.dll was in System32 and has the appropiate version.

But still can't find any updates.

Since the problem only appears when I add the updates (downloaded by WSUS) I think there could be one that "breaks" something.

Here is the list with all the updates:

1 - I tried adding only WindowsUpdateAgent7.6.7600.256.cab containing WUA.exe
<snip>
I noticed Wuapi.dll was missing. But if I start directly WUA.exe it says it's already installed.

2 - Then I tried an "online" Update Agent script, found on this board. It downloaded and installed WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86-7.6.7600.256-257.exe,

This time Wuapi.dll was in System32 and has the appropiate version.

But still can't find any updates.

3 - Since the problem only appears when I add the updates (downloaded by WSUS) <snip>
1 - How did you obtain it? Using the -X- UDC Script? The file is inside WUA.EXE (open it with 7-Zip or whatever to see it) so it can't be "missing".

2 - What "online" one? I don't remember that one... link, please.

3a - Is your "problem" that it continues to run (as the screenshot implies) without end (patience for it to COMPLETE) or is it that it finds NO UPDATES upon completion?

3b - You said by WSUS? Can you explain (you mean the Offline one)? ALL files come from MS' WSUS Servers.

3c - IF no Updates showed - IF it completed, then what you Integrated must be ALL that MS sees as "needed".

Please respond because you're not being clear ("Need Input").

1 - How did you obtain it? Using the -X- UDC Script? The file is inside WUA.EXE (open it with 7-Zip or whatever to see it) so it can't be "missing".

Yes, I obtained it using the -X- UDC Script. Yes, the file is inside WUA.exe and no, it is not in the System32 folder after install.

2 - What "online" one? I don't remember that one... link, please.

This one. Sorry my english, I named it "online" because it downloads it from internet.

But even if after using it the wuapi.dll file is copied in the System32 folder, I have exactly the same problem, no difference.

3a - Is your "problem" that it continues to run (as the screenshot implies) without end (patience for it to COMPLETE) or is it that it finds NO UPDATES upon completion?

Even after a few hours it still not find anything, just keep searching over and over. When it works it takes only a few min to find them.

Yes.

That's the problem like I said it doesn't complete.
