Are you sure that it hasn't an internal (built-in) modem?

I always love Windows XP!

In order for there to be a "modem" sound, there would have to be a modem somewhere, otherwise it is not a "modem" sound.

Cheers and Regards

It might be internal noise. Set the sound lower on the computer (in Windows) and compensate on the speakers and/or the headset if possible.

http://michaelgellis....com/modem.html

check L0 - M0 command list

altho windows should have (if not app with driver that comes)
a special dialog to lower/disable the noise

If you have a cell phone with a sim card, it can cause feedback through a speaker when it reups with the network.
