OK, I'm confused... you ARE aware that there's a rather LARGE defintions file that goes with it, more than likely comes with Windows Update? You -did- say you got "updated" to Version 4.5.216.0, right? (The supposed LAST XP one is as stated above - V4.4.304.0.)

I am clearly missing something, but if I go here:

http://download.micr.../MSEInstall.exe

 through the Wayback Machine:

https://web.archive..../MSEInstall.exe

I can download a MSEInstall.exe for x86 from a snapshot taken on March 25, 2014.

Files inside it (opened in 7-zip) are dated October, 23 2013.

The file downloaded from Filehippo is EXACTLY the same.

This should mean that the version for download on MS servers was the same at least up to March 25, 2014.

1 - @-X-: the Web Archive (ORG) link in the CodeBox -is- the October one, just prior to MS "updating" to exclude XP. I'm aware of the versions. Trust me, I checked by downloading both of them (and the Filehippo one) and comparing to the originals from the first link.

Yes but you say the one in my original link is the October one or perhaps I'm confused. Sorry, I'm just really tired from the EOL work and providing support for the EOL UDC through Twitter. Need to stop that and make them come here instead.

EDIT: I mean, you say it's still valid.

Also note, entereing the Post#1 x86 link also yields a March date that is still valid (same as Filehippo)

Like I said...tired. :)

Take a nap, -X-...

Clarification -

Original links (post#1) no good. Replaced with non-XP (the "newer" version) ones. Web Archive, when using original links for the search, yields XP ("correct" version) when using the March dates (since they're past the October "true" dates" but before the "replacement" of newer version). I will contend that the link I gave for getting the Latest Definitions is correct (I hope) "assuming" they're common to the "correct" version and the "current" version.

HTH

-edit- Also (per your edit above) "That was then, this is now". They -did- pull a "fast one". The "good" one has gone the way of the west. :( Let's just say this would be equivalent to an -immediate- removal of the Windows 9x "corporate" pages. ;)

It's much easier to support everybody when they're all in one place. :)

Yeah, what I think will just be an easy one off question sometimes turns into more.

Didn't think of that! It's Microsoft Update, not Windows Update btw. I never use MS update. Don't need or want any of their offerings.

I ran MU under Sandboxie and got the ?crup? URL. I always remember crup but not sure. This one has ftpk instead.

1 - @Flasche - kind of "implies" that the newer version (with a "mod") may be installable to "standard XP".

2 - @-X- - Kind of "implies" that it's still available but ONLY through MS Update.

(wow!)

OK, you're gonna LOVE this, all of the XP x64 Users!

Filehippo -also- has the XP-supported x64 under the name... VISTA! I have double-checked this and it's -sxactly- the same as the Original, so you now have TWO choices of "where to get XP MSE x86/x64". Either FileHippo -or- Web Archive will work!

Get the XP/Vist/Win7 x64 (yes, all three, but we -only- care about XP) from here -

http://www.filehippo...vista_64/51104/

;)

HTH and Happy MSE'ing!

========

@-X- Maybe you could update post#1 to reflect this (even though you only work w/x86)? Also, have you "tested" the "theory" that the Definitions work with the "older" version (post#2)? This would allow for "multiple" PC's to be "updated" by a single download, if anyone is actually using MSE...

-edit- Dang! Post#35 has the exact same FileHippo/WebArchive x86 but the "modified" date is newer. MS, you crazy people!

Been cleaning the hell out of my apartment, catching up on all the lasted Formula 1 news, seeing what family is up to on Facebook. All kinds of things that these the series of tubes has that suck the life out of you.

Strange that it's not available (AFAICT) for Windows8

Windows 8 has MSE/Windows Defender implemented too. If you don't have other AV installed the Action Center warns you that Windows Defender is deactivated and urges you to activate it.

I can confirm his statement. (Just called defender)

I think you misunderstood. THERE IS NO MSE AVAILABLE fo Win8.x! In Vista/Win7/Win8 it -IS- Defender (as I said) -and- ATM MSE ("Super" Defender) is -only (currently) available for Vista/Win7 (and apparently POS 2009) -unless- you get the FileHippo (or archives -or- "offering" from MS Update -not- Windows Update?).

Sorry for any confusion that may have appeared in my previous comments.

HTH and "Happy MSE'ing".

Been hearing rumours on other forums I frequent that the latest updates to MSE is causing people's computers to become inaccessible?

Not sure if there is any truth to these claims, but I would be *interested* to see whether Microsoft would stoop to such a level.
