About Windows 10

Hi, everyone. I've got W10 from this page:

I intend to install it onto my current 8.1. Of course, I will backup the whole system before starting the installation. Is anyone here, who already had W10, interested in sharing your opinions about this new OS?

I'd like to have a place to talk and ask about any incoming problems of W10, so I created this topic. Thank you all for reading and replying.

It took 15 minutes to install this new Windows and then another 30 minutes to apply all the settings, and it restarted several times! All the applications on the desktop continue to work OK. Some applications on the metro have to be reinstalled from the store to run well.

I hope to find a working patch so that I can use other themes instead of the default. It looks awful because all the windows now have zero borders!

It seems that this Windows isn't Windows 10 at all. Going to the below page says that my operating system is still windows 8.

PS. Thanks for moving this thread to the right place.

I forgot to talk about Avira. I had to do the following steps to have it work properly: first uninstall the current Avira, and restart Windows, then turn off Windows Defender, and finally install Avira back.

Now Action Center recognises it and no longer asks me to install any other anti virus for Windows.

I don't trust it. How exactly does that website detect an OS? How much you want to bet the logic is something like:

if winver >6.3 then OS="Windows 8"

ACTUALLY, it is this:

if ((ua.indexOf("Windows NT 6.2") >= 0) || (ua.indexOf("Windows NT 6.3") >= 0))                return "Windows 8";
Which is based solely on your browser's user agent, which ISN'T actually reliable since you can change it if you want. Go see what your current user agent is:

I click on that link and have this (I am using Maxthon):

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Maxthon/4.4.2.2000 Chrome/30.0.1599.101 Safari/537.36

While the About Windows shows the version as 6.4.

Wind has been NT ("New Technology") sicnce 2000 :

http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/304289 :

"To determine the operating system that is running on a system, you must obtain the following data:

Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows Me Windows NT 4.0 Windows 2000 Windows XP

PlatformID 1 .................... 1 .................... 1 .................... 2 .......................... 2 ................... 2

Major Version 4 .................... 4 .................... 4 .................... 4........................... 5 ................... 5

Minor Version 0 ................... 10 ................. 90 .................... 0 .......................... 0 ................... 1

..."

and so on to today :

...

The M$Windows - 10 is actually - M$Windows - 9 ...

...

is actually NT version 6.4 ...

& Build 9841

...

Vista was NT 6.0

...

So , Windows 10 (9) is using Vista 's framework for booting (BCD) , etc.

&

FrequentlyGivenAnswer : The Windows NT 6 boot process <http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/FGA/windows-nt-6-boot-process.html>

...

Look for the Build # to change as the Beta progresses ...

I get used to the default theme just after 2 days!

Still don't like that every time I open File Explorer, it always goes to Home first. Not know a way change it to This PC.

The ONLY way to get used to borderless, styleless windows is to not use an older system for a very long time.  If you do go back and run an older system, such as perhaps the host system on which you're testing a new OS in a virtual machine, you get the whole perspective.  Borderless windows do not an easier to use desktop make.

Not much discussion here...

I've configured up a system from soup to nuts, applying every trick in the book (the one I've written on configuring Windows 8).

Almost everything applied verbatim, with a couple of things needing registry tweaks instead of being able to use a UI tool to configure (thinking about getting file dates / times to show right), confirming the appearance that this is no more than just a 8.2 build in reality.

Why does Microsoft have to have such a tremendously unpolished UI in a preview version?  Is this the same as last time, where they tried to do some kind of "migration" trick to wean people off the old UI?  As much as people dislike the Win 8 UI, it doesn't seem like they need to do a whole lot of weaning...

Anyway, I've got Win 10 Enterprise x64 TP running as a lean and mean desktop machine.  I've even left UAC enabled, and am seeing how well that can be lived-with.  It's still a bit of a pain, but a man can get used to some pain.

By the way, an unsung feature I've discovered is that the system will now send mouse wheel events to whatever window you're hovering over, without the need for a 3rd party application such as WizMouse.
