Brandonh1091
Not too long ago, I came across an old, extremely cheap Gateway 500SE computer at a yard sale that had Windows98 SE installed on it. I've been messing around on it lately, and haven't been able to get any of my USB thumb drives to work...well, not for long anyways. If I start the computer up without a USB plugged in, it starts up just fine. As soon as the desktop comes up, I can plug any one of them in and it works just fine. The problem occurs if I unplug the device, and then plug it back in."A fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C177DC30 in VXD SMARTVSD(02) + 00000000. The current application will be terminated." I press a key, and it goes back to my desktop just fine. However, no matter how many times I plug/unplug the USB drive, it never pops up again under My Computer. On my Device Manager, it shows a red X beside both my "USB Disk" under Storage Devices, and my "SanDisk Cruzer Glide" under Disk Drives. It's only after I restart my computer like I said above, and repeat the process that it works again. I've tried a few solutions on different sites, but nothing seems to be working right. Any tips? submix8c
Did you install NUSB?http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/43605-maximus-decim-native-usb-drivers/Download here (FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS):http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.phpBe prepared to have to reinstall Win98 if you screw up really bad.Come back if you have any more problems/questions. Drivers (maybe?):http://www.mpcdrivers.com/apps/filelist500se.html?ID=17270And you can see that there are several MoBo's used in that model. Which is yours? There should be a Model# Sticker on the back. Worse, there *seems* to be both an AMD and an Intel variation of "500SE", also one with XP pre-installed, so the exact MoBo/ModelNumber is nearly a must to help. Brandonh1091
Thanks for the reply! Yes, I had already tried installing NUSB and it does the same thing. Here's the information on the back of the tower:Gateway: MFATXPNT NMZ 500SE 0028006835
Brandonh1091
I ended up doing a clean install of Windows 98se, and after reinstalling, NUSB works perfect. However, now the audio isn't working. I know for a fact it had SoundMax's integrated audio as far as the sound drivers went. I reinstalled the drivers for 98se, and the installation goes fine. Once it restarts and gets back to the desktop, it isn't able to find any new installed drivers. It begins to search for a new PCI Multimedia Device, but eventually I get a pop up telling me that "No ADI codec drivers are installed." I'm completely stumped on this one. I've read over a few posts online with people having the same issue, but most are related to Windows XP and above. submix8c
Seems that the Gateway's "name" of motherboard is Nimitz (the NMZ part is the "tell"). The last # is the Serial#.You *need* the ADI Soundmax Drivers for Windows98. Apparently, your *original* installation had them and now they're gone/overwritten. You should have tried following the given instructions in that link before reinstalling. At the least, you should have located and backed up your drivers. The good news is that the Sound Drivers on the given link (mpc) are also for Win98SE, even though it says WinXP+Win2K.***Download it and install it.***It's a self-extracting ZIP file executable, so run it, then run "SETUP.EXE" -or- just go select the INF file in the "SE" folder.Be aware that many motherboards used in Gateway were MPC (Business/Pro desktops). This is almost the *only* place you can find them easily. This should "cure" all (most?) of your problems. I *believe* this may be your Motherboard (ignore the CPU spec) -http://panam.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/INTEL/2516282/2516282tc.shtmlhttp://panam.gateway.com/s//MOTHERBD/INTEL/2516282/2516282nv.shtmlOpen the case (with unplugged, natch) and check. If so, you should have everything you need.THIS one is the "Nimitz 2" (seems to be "newer" version, higher FSB) -http://panam.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Intel2/2519274/2519274nv.shtmlIt's probably not yours. HTH slightly o/t -seems to be manufactured around 2002/2003?http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/945460-xp-wont-install-completely.htmlalso used in the "300X" -http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/56608-2-gateway-mfatxpnt-300x-specs...and the 500Lhttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/so-you-only-have-pci-slots-and-want-to-game.51437/page-74 Google:nimitz site:panam.gateway.comor just the model name gets results. Brandonh1091
Awesome, that did the trick! My sound is working perfectly! I tried several different versions of the SoundMax drivers, but skipped over that one because it mentioned XP/Windows 2000. Should've known it was the only one I didn't try haha.Thank you so much!
