Hi All!
Does anyone over here could guide me or, if you could provide me some information on the WINS Server setup? I would like to know more about these WINS Server system as I'm consider myself as a beginner in this Networking World!
Will this WINS Server setup be able to restrict internet access within a LAN which the hosts are getting a IP address dynamically from the DHCP Server? What I meant is that, the host only have intranet access and, it could not get to the outside world.
Thanks and Regards,
Kent

Check this out:
Windows 2000/2003 Wins - http://labmice.techt...orking/wins.htm
The setup is about the same for both server types. I don't know of any way to use wins to block internet access. You should try ISA server for that. Wins is primarily used in mid-sized to large networks to look up information on pc's and find out what users are logged into what pc on the network. Hope this helps.

You should avoid WINS like the plague that it is.
Use dynamic DNS instead.
WINS was Microsoft's attempt to "embrace and extend" DNS. It didn't work and that's why Microsoft ended up using dynamic DNS and LDAP and calling it "Active Directory".
