I am a complete noob about online music downloading and the formats, but my 12 year old has grown into it and wants to download mucic. I know this is the perfect place to ask some questions.

First, which online site is the best in terms of selecting the songs and later burning to CDs that can be played in his MP3 player or having them mailed directly to my house?

Second, what is the best variable in terms of sound quality? I think its called bit sample rate?

Are you talking about downloading for a price or getting off the p2p networks for free..

Chris.

CuBie, Downloading from legitimate sites for a price. In the past I saw a few discussions about some sites having a better selection than others, faster pipes, things like that.

Thanks

There's Itunes, but I do not know about getting a CD of it after you purchased some music, I do know that most music costs 99 cents. This is for people in US. If you're in Canada, there's puretracks.ca which still costs 99 cents canadian, the same thing, but for this CD, it has limits, like how much you can burn. I know puretracks use WMV format to restrict permissions. I do not know about Itunes.

You could use Kazaa, Itunes or Napster to download music. You can go to download.com to find other programs to download music.

Hey MW,

Here is a comparison that was done on "The Screensavers" that gives a preety good rundown on some of the online music stores. They don't cover all the sites but quite a few.
Also 128 bit is about all you need as far as sound quality for mp3s. It gives very near cd quality without using a horrid amount of disk space.

If you're in Canada, you can download MP3s off P2P networks LEGALLY for the moment! :)

I encode 128 mp3 because it's near CD quality. I tried others like 192 and 320, but I don't hear the difference in the quality.

i prefer kazaa lite k++, i can block bad ip ranges and stop users from seeing my files, the only thing is that DC++ is easier to search for me.

Whenever I want to use Kazaa Lite K++, I have to do certain things to get myself pumped up. For example, I'll dress in solid black colors, wear green night vision goggles, and crawl around my floor looking for the RIAA and the Feds and the like. Then, bam! Out of my secret sock I pull the Kazaa Lite CD of Power. Quickly I throw it into my cd drive, and start the installer. While it's loading, I seal any windows and put a towel under my door. Once it's finished installing, I open the program and disable sharing of files and uncheck act as a supernode. OK, the easy part is over. Next, I manually type in the ASCII values of the words I'm searching for, just in case somebody is outside my window watching me. Before I hit the search button, I layer the inside of my room with tin foil. Satellites watch everything you do, you know. I then locate the file I wish to "borrow" and silently click "Download now". Now comes the tough part! Every excrutiating second that I'm borrowing these files, I have to constantly watch out my window for black SUV's. It goes like this. RUN TO TEH WINDOW! Run back to computer, check progress. RUN TO THE WINDOW! Run back, etc. Quite a workout in those black stealth clothes. After the long wait, my file is done downloading. I immediately burn it to CD and put it in my other special sock. Finally, I destroy the hard drive of my computer, break the Klite CD in half, and burn the clothes I was wearing so they can't trace my DNA. Then, I poor alcohol over my keyboard so they can't get my fingerprints! HOLY CRAP there's still residual electrons on my screen telling everybody WHAT I DID!!!11! LEAVE NO EVIDENCE!!! DESTROY EVERYTHING!!!111!!!1!!!!!111!1!1one
