Hi,
I have an 80 gig hd running on XP Home and I am worried about it wearing itself out.
I can see it turning its light on all night long and hear a grinding (more like soft spinning) each time the light goes on.
I have the energy settings set to turn off the hd after 15 minutes and turn the monitor off but it seems like they dont do their job.
Am I right to be worried about wearing the hd out?

The first thing that comes to mind is that you have a heavily fragmented drive and Indexing Service is turned on. First of all, defragment your hard drive and see if that fixes anything. Next, turn off the Indexing Service on that drive by right-clicking it, going to Properites, and unchecking "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching".
Will the hard drive wear out? If it's doing that all night every night, it'll probably decrease the life of the hard drive.

I got it fixed.
Defraged and deindexed and still had this sound.
I finally got down there with the power on and the cover off and realized it was the video card fan.
I had balls of dust jammed in the workings.
I cleaned it out and now the thing seems to be back to normal.
Thanks
I needed to defrag anyway.
