Hi guys,

I am trying to set a custom logon screen for my Win10 RedStone update on OOBE mode. I am messing with it for last 15 days and found no luck changing it. I have found registry keys which are responsible for it, but I cant manage to get it working. It always select stock image after OOBE.
Here are the keys I have found.

A more interesting thing would be how to get rid of the lock screen all together....

There's a way and have a look at this post on the MDL site (You'll need to become a member) which will help to eliminate it. Unfortunately for the OP I don't know how to change the lock screen picture to a custom picture as my lock screen is disabled completely but will see what I can find

I think You guys misunderstood me. I am talking about that background at logon screen we see in redstone update. previously it was 2 different images for lockscreen and logon screen, now its just single image which works as both lockscreen picture and logon screen ( where it prompts us to enter user password ). I am talking about changing that one.

I know about LockScreenGone tool, but its irrelevent here.

I've recently "upgraded" to Windows 10, and the first thing I wanted to do was to get rid of that picture of some rocks in the sea through a cave mouth on start up and replace it with a custom image.
Unfortunately all my researches seem to indicate that since the Anniversary Update, this is now impossible, at least if you have auto-login enabled, which I have.
I can change the user lock screen, and make the user logon screen the same just by using the UI settings, but it seems to be impossible to change the default logon screen (the one you see when you first start the system) unless you have to put in a user password.
If the password is bypassed, the default login screen (the rocks through the cave mouth) seems to be fixed and cannot be altered!
Has anyone found a way around this?
I gather that the gpedit functions which used to control this, so that people could use their own branding on the lock screen for instance, have now been depreciated in the Anniversary Update unless you have the Enterprise version of Windows 10. They've now been removed form the Pro version, which is really annoying!
There are dark mutterings that this was removed because it would have enabled people to prevent Microsoft from forcing advertising onto people's logon screens.
Does anyone have an answer to this?
Presumably that cave picture must come from somewhere (it's not the one in C:\Windows\Web\Screen, I've already tried that!) so presumably it can be changed, even if it's awkward and difficult to do. I can't imagine that I would want to change it all that often!
Any advice appreciated.
BTW, I know I can change the image for a plain colour field using a registry hack, but I'd really like to actually have a different image!
:)

The WinAero site is good for a lot of such info.  Edit:  I missed that xpclient had already provided this info, above.  Sorry for the redundancy.

http://winaero.com/blog/disable-logon-screen-background-image-in-windows-10-without-using-third-party-tools/

Note the prominent link on that page for Disable logon screen background image in Windows 10 Anniversary Update which describes how to remove the image only.  I don't know the "why", but the implication is now that you can only remove it (I have done so and see only a blue background).

One of the nice things about the WinAero Tweaker program is that it provides links to pages like those above.

Why would people respect Microsoft after removing the simple ability to see the image you prefer?

Thanks Noel, yes I looked into WinAero, and discovered the same, it used to be possible to change to a custom image using it, but since the Anniversary Update, no longer, all you can have now is the cave image or a plain colour field (which is actually the selected "accent colour" IIRC), not a different image.
I'd still like to know where that cave image comes from, as if its source can be identified, the potential must be there to change it, even if it's hard coded into a dll or some such.
As I said, there seem to be quite a few conspiracy theories about why Microsoft has removed this facility in Windows 10 Pro!

A search for ext:jpg under C:\Windows turns up images that match that "rocks through cave mouth" here:

C:\Windows\Web\Screen\img100.jpg

C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-t..nbackgrounds-client_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.0_none_0a8b2f0f10246157\img100.jpg

Being under WinSxS implies that the image may be under system protection (meaning it may be changed back automatically if you change it), and Windows Defender might not let you change it to begin with.

Having done that search I found a remarkable number of images having to do with Apps that I thought I had expunged from my system.  Card games, pictures of people I've never met, a tent in the desert, what look like tutorials...  God, what bloat!

Yes, I found both of those as well, but changing them for another image in the same place with the same name made no difference, the cave picture still obstinately stuck there on the default login screen!
I'm becoming convinced that it must be hard-coded somewhere.

Thanks den, but I think I found that article when I was searching before, it is from 2015.
I think the fundamental problem is that things were changed with the Windows 10 Anniversary update, and the settings detailed there don't now actually change anything.
The article has not been updated to reflect that.
You can change the user lock screen image, which you see when you log off, but you can't change the default lock screen, which you see when you boot up, unless you have Windows 10 Enterprise.
Those settings don't do anything now even in Windows 10 Pro, you're still stuck with that wretched cave image!
