As of today, running 98SE on such a new computer will get you:

-No 2D and 3D acceleration whatsoever with the universal VBEMP driver, which is similar to the VGA.SYS default driver in XP. You will only have good performance at the desktop, that's it. The DOS window might not even work at all.

-Slow internet speeds with NDIS2 driver (if it works at all)

-SATA with paid patch only, without it, only VERY SLOW 16bit compatible mode disk access, which is again, VERY SLOW!

-Up to 4GB available RAM with paid patch only, without it, only 1GB

-No HD Audio support whatsoever

-With NUSB there is USB 2.0/Flashdrives support.

Is it worth it? No.

Just get parts which do actually work with 98SE, its fun to do, and not that expensive.

In addition to the Patches already mentioned, you would probably need the following to make a useable system.

1. 9x compatible Video Card.
2. USB Sound Adapter or PCI Card.
3. USB Ethernet Adapter or PCI Card.

There is a driver for modern Realtek 8111 NICs but only at 10/100 speeds.

OH MY God I have to go to a junk ward to find them out.

Thanks Friends.

For the Video Card probably. There isn't a single one still available at my local Micro Center.

The USB Sound and Ethernet Adapters and PCI Sound Cards are still available new. I'm not sure about new PCI Ethernet Cards.

Newer Hardware

Advantages:
1. Faster CPUs with more instructions.
2. Multiple Cores.
3. Bigger and faster RAM.
4. Bigger and faster hard drives.
5. Better performance when virtualized.
6. Can be multi-booted with other OSes that can take better advantage of the above features.

Disadvantages:
1. Needs my Patches to run 9x and to use bigger hard drives.
2. Needs my APIs to take advantage of bigger RAM and Multiple Cores.
3. Need to be a programmer to use those APIs or wait for me to write an App.
4. Built-In functionality becoming unusable such as Video, Audio and often Ethernet.
5. Tweaking often required.
6. Loss of legacy hardware such as Floppy, Serial Port, Parallel Port, Joystick, P/S 2 Ports, PATA support, etc.
7. Totally unusable systems for 9x are right around the corner. Some laptops are already there.

If you are not a programmer, don't need extreme performance, multi-boot or virtualize, go back at least a decade and you should do just fine.

Best as in "adequate for normal computing" or best as in "performance?"

If for normal computing, just about any motherboard based on the Intel 865 or 875 Chipset will do fine and support up to 3+GHz P4.

If for performance, here are a few standouts.

Intel D875PBZ Pic (Last 9x-compatible Intel-branded board. Be sure to get true Intel retail version not OEM "Wasp" version)

Soyo P4I875P Dragon 2 Platinum Pic (Beware of BAD CAPS; these are excellent boards but will likely need CAPS replaced)

DFI Lanparty 875P-T Pic (Very rare LGA775 board with 98SE compatible chipset)

MSI 865PE Neo3-F Pic (More common LGA775 board)

I got a MSI 865PE Neo3-F board in a local shop . I brought a P4 3Ghz  and 1 gb ram .

40gb pata hdd will do no problem . i have one lying some where.

i need to know which GFX card will be best for 98 SE.

ATI brand - X850 XT Platinum Edition is the last with working drivers
NVidia brand - 6800 Ultra is the last with official drivers; 7950GT is last that works with unofficial drivers
7950 GT AGP cards are EXTREMELY rare however.
Best bet is to find a 256MB 7800GS AGP
7xxx series NVidia cards will probably need the Shutdown patch applied to the driver.
Cards with 512MB of RAM may need rloew's NVidia patch to make all RAM available.

Without KernelEX: Firefox 2 and Opera 10.63 (I think?). <<=== Not terribly useful in a modern context.

With KernelEX: Firefox 10 and Opera 12.02. <<=== Still not great, but probably the best you're going to get until Retrozilla gets better rendering capabilities.
