ryanch94
Hi everyone, I have Windows XP Pro 32 bit working perfectly on my Asus K55A laptop. The only thing that isn't working is the brightness controls. All the other controls using the Fn keys (volume, wireless switch, sleep, etc.) work fine. Normally I'd ignore this issue only that the display is just a small bit too dim for me and I'd like to increase the brightness one way or another. So if anyone knows how to enable the brightness Fn keys on this laptop or knows another way to increase the brightness I'd love to hear your suggestion. Thanks! jaclaz
Looong shot, but check how the monitor is seen in device manager: http://visihow.com/Restore_Lost_Brightness_Control_app_in_ASUS_Laptops_After_Updating If I get it right, the Fn+F5/F6/F7/F8 need not a driver but only work on some monitors with some ACPI settings because of conflicts with the "adaptive brightness": https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1015071 The good Linux guys with this problem seemingly disable the "light sensor" ACPI0008 with an acpi_osi boot parameter: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1348890 Check also the exact PID/VID (or Prod/Ven) of the device you have, maybe there is some Asus driver for an earlier model with the same ID's. jaclaz
ryanch94
Hi jaclaz, The monitor is seen as a Plug and Play monitor, it has the ID DISPLAY\AUO26EC, which I couldn't find any driver for online, is there a way to disable the adaptive brightness on XP then? The given resource: http://visihow.com/Restore_Lost_Brightness_Control_app_in_ASUS_Laptops_After_Updating suggests to "force" the use of the "Generic PNP Monitor", NOT the "PNP-Monitor (Standard)". Have you tried that? I was asking however if you have a device (the "ambient light sensor") connected to ACPI0008, and if yes, what was the ID of this sensor, it is a loong shot, but maybe a driver for it exists for XP. jaclaz

I can't actually find the Generic PnP driver on Windows XP, I tried to use the Windows 7 Generic PnP driver in XP but it didn't work. Changing brightness works fine in 7, just not in XP
jaclaz
It's strange. These kind of "Fn keys" utiltities are usually either "no driver needed" (because their functioning is embedded in BIOS) or "driver needed" (i.e. if the "special" driver for the keyboard is not installed all Fn functions such as brightness, contrast, volume, monitor switching, etc. don't work at all). The fact that only one of the Fn keys function does not work should mean that your laptop uses a "mixed mode". Do you have the ATK0100 driver installed (on the XP)? (You should have an Unknown device in Device Manager if you have not) In case it should be this one here:http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/A6J/ATK0100_XP_061027.zip At least page A-10 of the manual http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/K55A/HelpDesk_Manual/ says so:http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/K55VM/E7187_eManual_K55VM_K55VS_Z104.pdf (but it could be a left-over for some other model, you never know with these crappy docs). If all the above fails, then you may want to try an external program, such as (example) Pangobright: http://www.pangobright.com/ jaclaz

Probably looks like a small hole somewhere around the display.... I'm one of those old "hardware guys" who'd be tempted to fix this problem by opening up the display case and soldering a trimmer potentiometer across the bloody thing. Then adjust brightness to taste

Mathwiz
You should measure the resistance of the sensor with your thumb over it (so no light is reaching it) and use a potentiometer of similar or slightly larger resistance.
