Without doing anything else, I rebooted to see if the mouse keyboard problem returned, unfortunately it did :(

Try removing the keyboard.

No, I am serious, try disconnecting both the Keyboard and mouse, boot to the XP and then reconnect only the mouse (you can use the on screen keyboard temporarily).

What happens?

Then try using any of the other ports (I know that the two you are using are supposed to be mouse and keyboard) but just to see what happens.

Can you procure/borrow/steal :w00t: a PS/2 mouse and keyboard?

Still to see what happens.

(I know you seemingly have only a "combo" PS/2 port, but trying either PS/2 mouse or keyboard on it would be ok).

Do you have the mouse (and keyboard) available at logon screen?

If not, you may want - temporarily - to set the system as autologin:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/login-automatically-on-windows-xp-home-professional/

Then, get USBDeview:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

and try experimenting with it and particularly with its command line switch /enable.

It would be an ugly workaround (provided that it works) to re-enable the mouse and keyboard at each boot (say via startup items), but maybe it allows you to carry on further experiments to find the culprit.

Still no mouse

Tried the USB 3 ports, same result

Would a PS/2 adapter suffice?

Nothing at logon

Autologon already enabled

should i set USBDeview to run at startup?

@Damnation

It depends on the actual mouse.

Some are "both" USB and PS/2 (and will work with the adapter) some are USB only (some logitech ones are PS/2 but work when connected with their  PS/2 to USB adapter).

Yes, the idea is - once verified that USBdeview works in adding/enabling the device (the keyboard when using the PS/2 mouse) you set it to run with the correct command line as a startup item, it has to be seen which kind of startup item would be better, but since hopefully it is only a temporary workaround, a shortcut/link in Startup folder.

Probably gonna stick my foot in my <select any orifice> and ask - is USB Legacy Support enabled in BIOS? (You do, after all, have PS/2 ports.)

Yes legacy support is enabled - there is also an EHCI handoff option which is also enabled.

Still the USB stops working

Keyboard (includes... DRIVERS):

http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/gaming-keyboard-g510#download

Odd. Your Mouse is showing as a Mass Storage Device. (DOH!) An AS2105 isn't a mouse! ASMedia USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosure!

Your "mouse" is part of the Keyboard? I see you have *TWO* HID devices as part of (beneath) the Keyboard's Composite Device entry.

Nope! Razer DeathAdder - http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-deathadder-chroma

And there *ARE* drivers for the Razer mouse.

*BOTH* appear to be "customizable* (the Mouse says DRIVER is, even!)

Value 2200E *appears* to be a Cyberpower USB UPS (Uninterruptible Power Source).

Have you installed the Drivers for the devices?

the AS2105 is a USB Drive, I have linux on it

I've installed the logitech, razer and cyberpower drivers (or software) but they have not resolved this problem. They still disappear.

The 2 extra HID devices might be related to the little LCD on my keyboard, but I'm not 100% sure on that

You do understand how this is exactly he opposite of "troubleshooting", right?

You should disconnect each and every USB device,  then run USB deview and remove each and every of them you see there.

Then try again with just one, single device attached. (the keyboard, for whatever reasons right now you have three instances of it. that may be part of the issue)

And do try with a "normal" keyboard!

Never mind, @jaclaz: @Damnation wants to solve it through sheer lucky guessing, not by any type of scientific troubleshooting, obviously. :}
