If you have broadband then there is no need for a download manager.

Not a category you asked about but the best browser is Maxthon if your IE6 is up to SP2. If not, use Firefox.

FIREWALL: ZoneAlarm Pro $40

ANTI-VIRUS: Don't need it w/ ZoneAlarm turned ON... use Ad-Aware SE Personal (FREE) every once in awhile until you figure out ZoneAlarm's settings.

DOWNLOADER: What!?! I remember messing with that on dial-up. Yea, I guess a Cable Modem or DSL would be a good start.

WINDOWS TUNING: TweakUI & FreshUI (FreshUI does a couple of cool things that TweakUI lacks) FREE

DEFRAG: O&O (makes it brainless, but most people seem to enjoy vegging out watching their computer defrag for some reason!) $50

GRAPHICS: JASC Paint Shop Pro ($70 online) -- If just viewing, then Irfanview (FREE) @ www.irfanview.com

EMAIL: Seriously, Outlook 2002 (on Office XP). Found that Outlook 2003 lacks rock-solid mail-merge with Excel & Word. You get what you pay for in this world.

Not true if you get a interupted download or want to pause it...

Haha I guess its an American thing then to not think further then your nose is long...

Pausing downloads can be very usefull... Also having all your downloads managed by a more stable and reliable program than the standard IE downloader is very usefull... Firefox has a great downloader built in just like Opera but IE still has the same crappy instable one... Download managers arent for downloading faster these days but they are for fast managing of downloads and other usefull extras...

Firewall: My good hardware firewall is all I need

AV: Kaspersky

Win Tuning: regedit

Download: GetRight/httrack/the one in firefox

email (uh, does gmail web mail count?)

Web Design: dreamweaver mx 2004 to throw things together quickly (although there's alot of good ones-not talking about frontpage here lol-and some nice utilities) Otherwise, for neat & clean code... even notepad works fine.

Graphics Development: Photoshop CS HANDS DOWN (well, the whole adobe creative suite really) and a whole bunch of other stuff you need (like camera RAW software, plugins, utilities, ...)

hd optimization: Just switched recently from O&O to Raxco PerfectDisk...

windows error checking: nothing, if it works it works, if it's messed bad reinstall it/reghost. These utilities mess your PC more than anything usually.

Anything else? hmm. *WAY* too much to list here hehe
(lots of other categories you didn't touch)

[edit: darn typos]

Because 2 Americans stated that using a download manager was outdated or of no use at all, thought they didnt look past the process of getting something in one go thus forgetting to see that download managers are very usefull still even if you have broadband.

Was just a joke :P .

Mosselman -

Well the Anti-American ribbings are getting old on this board.

Download managers are useful...tho in general they do lose a lot of their appeal once one has broadband, since most downloads take little to no time to get even if it fails once or twice.

That said tho....I still install GetRight when ever a high demand file comes out, like when a new copy of one of my fav Linux Distro's comes out...with a DM I have no problem aquiring it...where others may have to wait a day or so to get it.

Also most P2P file sharing apps are just over glorified DM's.

Any ways if you could please knock off the ribbings.
