It could also be a hardware problem. If it only happens when you are writing data, then it could be the hard drive.

Is your drive properly defragmented?
Have you enabled DMA for it?

Or have the drivers for the MoBo chipset got corrupted in anyway?
Also, see in System Properties whether windows is accessing your HDD in LBA mode (which is _extremely_ slow).

I defragemented drive, put in another one. But still same problem.
I think it has something to do with the CPU, it hangs.

Sounds simular to something i had a while back!
Norton Antivirus 2004 on a system with not too much resources free caused that.
It kept scanning everything what was accessed or moved/copied, and when you have a ...let's say.. light configuration of hardware it's really lagging the whole system!

Removed NAV2004 and voila! no probs anymore, went back to nav2003.
Hope it helps.

But if it's the CPU you can check on your temps...
How about an new clean install on that other disk of you?
What happens then?

I had Norton Ant-Virus 2 years ago.
Maybe the processor burned up?

It could be some kind of overheating, check that fans work ok and have a look at task manager what you have running.

I had a friend with same kind of problems that had a virus that used tftp.exe to download itself, once downloaded the antivirus cleared it, but it started again tftp.exe.....thus stalling system.

I am sorry to say that, but if you are positive that:

1) Hardware is OK(no overheating)
2) NO VIRUS/SPYWARE/ETC is installed
3) NO memory/processor hungry processes are running in background
4) NO conflicts between devices

your next option is to re-install from scratch.

One last possibility before taking the suggestion above is trying to see if there is some "non-due" activity on the PC by means of these tools:

Filemon and Regmon

So you had a faulty drive, and more than likely the (forgive me I just woke up here) li'l thing that reads/writes data was off a bit and misreading the drive causing the freezes/hangs.

I had a similar problem, my hard drive made a nails on a chalkboard noise and did much as you said, it would stop responding for some time, though it also would make the noises..

No, SMART is not going to prolong the life of your HD in any way. It just alerts you to any possible problems, and tells you if its going to fail anytime soon.

SMART - the full-form of it:

SMART is an abbreviation for Standard Modular Avionics Repair and Test
 huh?
naah.... just messing with ya, here's the correct one:

SMART:  Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology
