Hi,

Is there any way to know which hotfixes should I download for my Win98SE, other than looking in the Microsoft Site (now that WU is off)?

Is there a way to unattendedly install all these things including IE & DX?

I think this is still the best source but manual rather than automatic.

Some things are sacrificed by continuing to use Win9x. One of them is a slipstreaming. I have found no easy method or program available to accomplish what you ask with Win98SE. You can manually download each update/hotfix. Then you will have them available for installation.

Someone who knows how to integrate these updates/hotfixes into the correct installer might be able to help you out with the rest of what you ask.

Ask the guy at the website provided by jaclaz in the link for the UNOFFICIAL update that has only a few of the updates. He knows how ;)

Well, the Un-official ServicePack guy only has an update to be run post-install. Whereas, I suppose you're looking for something which will truly slip-stream (i.e., replace the old files with the new). Win9x series is simply too frail for that....

Anyway, maybe there still is hope - the installer gives me the impression that there is a remote possibility of using the "/Q:A /R:N" switch for silent install. But I doubt it will be enough, considering that there's that agreement that comes up when your run it...

10x to both of you...

I already tried emailing the creator 2 weks ago, but got no answer...

querying the setup file (/?) does return those option, I'll to do some testings cause I decided my PC is too old for Win2K...

@prathapml:
at which stage do you suggest installing the SP, & what about the rest of the installs (such as IE, DX)?

I'd suggest to let the installer do all the file registering it wants, and all the registry tasks complete. And this happens only after the second re-boot (i.e., it boots into windows after setup completes, and then you re-boot it a second time). Only after that do I normally install the drivers or updates and so on. So that's when you could install the 98se's unofficial SP. Then prolly reboot (yet again!) before doing IE6 and dX.

The reason is, if you install an update too early, it might get replaced/roll-back in all the heat-and-dust that setup carries out during install, and schedules to happen at first-boot (remember the "configuring windows..." progress bar with a drum? ;) ).

I set this up a while back using the unofficial service pack (sesp15en.exe). Note that there is a new release 1.6 today, haven't tested it yet though.
I install Direct X 9C first (extract and use /Silent switch), Reboot
I then install IE6 SP1 (IE6SETUP.EXE /Q:U /R:N), Reboot ( why /Q:U? I like to see something happening)
Then I install the unofficial service pack using the /Q:U /R:N switch. Reboot.
My kit then needed,
329414 Critical Update (Q329414.exe /C:"dahotfix.exe /q /n" /q)
816093 Security Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
832894 Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
837009 Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
831167 Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
870669 Critical Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
823353 Cumulative Security Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
840315 Security Update (switch /Q:U /R:N)
The new IE6 SP1 update 833989 is also required. (switch /Q:U /R:N)

I run these from batch files, copying the next batch to the startup folder and
rebooting using wizmo. It takes about 10-12 minutes on my old 475mhz
to be all in and WU shows no critical updates needed. Qchain would definitely be nice here.

This is well done and is likely as clean as it will get without an installer that can do the entire thing for you.

HI MtK

I install 98SE clean using msbatch.inf answer file.
I start the updates from CD initially and finish from the HD.
I do it like this so I can use my update CD on any 98SE kit.
My autorun CD copies sleep and wizmo to the windows folder.
The updates and hotfixes are copied to the root of systemdrive
using the same folder heirarchy as detailed in the XP tutorial, eg:
Install, DX9C, IE6SP1, Hotfixes.
My first batch file copies the next run batch to the startup folder,
then runs Direct X 9C, then reboots.
At reboot, 98 does its thing, "Updating System Settings", then the GUI
loads and the run second batch calls the IE6 SP1 batch. This deletes
the first run batch and copies the second run batch to startup, and
so on.
It was a royal pain to set up compared to XP or 2000. It has too
many batch files calling each other, but it works.
Future plans are to try and eliminate some of the batch files that
call other batch files.
I plan to test the 1.61 update this weekend.

how & where do you tell the setup to add the first batch file?

& where is it best to install additional drivers?

Internet Explorer home
From there, links are available for the win9x version of download of IE6 SP1.

DirectX download
From there, you can download the full re-distributable installer, for win9x of DirectX 9.0c

Hoping this helps...

yes, the downloader offers to save all the CABs for the windows versions you choose. Then take the same to a win98se machine and installing will run fine.

About dX, the link was wrong, thanks for pointing it out - fixed it to link to 9.0c properly now. :)

So does it work then? I mean, does it do its planned tasks and then ask for re-boot at the right time (at the end, after completion)?
If that is so, then maybe one of the re-boot stoppers will work, I have no idea of which one will work.

The first one to try is the "/Z" switch. You can use it this way - "/Q:A /R:N /Z".
If that doesn't work, put "/norestart" in the place of "/Z" and try again.
If that doesn't work too, do it with "/noreboot" and try. Or, maybe "REBOOT=Suppress". Don't give up. Its all trial-and-error methods which tell us things. Do post back on the one you found to be correct.

About the IE download, yes that is to be expected on IE6SP2. Well, no way around it, except to download it from a Win98 machine itself.
