You should add the "DOS prompt here" powertoy...

http://www.3feetunde...les/doshere.zip

...and Spider Solitaire (from windows ME)...

http://www.3feetunde...pider_setup.exe

I install these on every Windows 98 SE system I build or update for friends.

Adding Windows ME files is not allowed. It requires Windows ME license.

Doesn't your service pack include the WinME version of Defrag?

If not, my bad.

Here's a site with descriptions of the Defrag fix and other enhancements to 98SE using stuff found in other OS versions or service packs...
http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm

Regardless, you should include the "DOS prompt here" powertoy.

It's similar to the "Open Command Window Here" right click option in XP.
Very, very useful.

Hi gape,
Your package is appreciated a lot. Been using the win98 SE SP since v1.2 or so, I think. Thanx for soldiering on with this. :)

Maybe you already mentioned it somewhere, but I might have missed it. Is there a silent install option? You know.... like we use "/S" or "/Silent" or "/Q:A /R:N" or something?
So that we can schedule it to silently install at first boot after install - because slip-streaming is not very stable on win9x.

Hi prathapml,

Silent installation is possible on 1.x versions. You should use /Q switch like other Win98 updates. For 2.0, I'm not sure about the silent installation now. However, I hope 2.0 will contain a stable slipstreaming support.

OK, TweakUI is a good idea. It will be in the 2.0.

BETA 2 Features (Work in progress):

- NEW: Windows Critical Update Notification as optional feature.
- NEW: TweakUI as optional feature.
- NEW: New animated boot logo (adds "Second Edition" label) as optional feature.
- UPDATED: New Desktop Icons as optional feature now.
- UPDATED: HTML Help Update (taken from XP SP2 which is compatible with Win98 SE).

If you have any idea for this next major version, please write it in this topic.

Your next update will include the ability to view Attributes in a Windows Explorer window. Very good.

What I wish could be done is to view all three different file dates (not just Modified) by adding these two columns to Windows 98 SE Explorer:

Created
Last Accessed

These could be particularly useful when one of the dubious websites we occasionally stumble upon barfs up a bunch of spyware onto our hard drives that SpyBot and AdAware don't seem to find because the file names are always changing in an attempt to escape detection. However, dates cannot escape detection, because Windows records when the file is being written to the drive.

By being able to display files in Created order and Last Accessed order, it adds to the control you have over your files.

What IE updates are being bundled in the beta SP2? Im just curious because if the full IE 6.0 update is being included, I would personally prefer that it be optional.

It contains only IE 5.0 updates. However, installer checks the version number of the files, so if you have newer IE, it doesn't copy any of these files.

What I meant was that I didnt want IE upgraded regardless of its currently installed version. Its just that I dont want to bother wasting disk space upgrading software I dont use. I guess there would be some cases that I would still want IE updated due to its intergration into the OS. Im not positive but didnt the IE 6 upgrade also force the user to install Outlook?... which also another program that I do not use. Other than that, does the patch still work ok with a 98lite chubby install?

ssmokee,

SP -doesn't- touch any IE file, if you have IE 6.0 or 5.5.

If you have IE 5.0, it -only- installs/upgrades some IE 5.0 files.

98lite keeps some IE files on the system. If these files are from IE 5.0, SP only upgrades these files. It never installs any new file, if you don't have related software.

Version 2.0 still works with 98lite Chubby, and it will probably work with Sleek, too.

I think lots of users don't need these new icons. So I think I can remove this feature. What do you think?

In 1.x, new icons were from Windows 2000.

it looks good and MS has made it in 2 OS (WinME and W2K) - i think it can be used as an option.

I like very much the look of the desktop with the new icons taken from win 2000 so I sugest that they can be added as an option so that the ones who don't like them coul disable this option.

I much prefer the win2k icons and colour scheme. Im using a Samsung LCD monitor and I find win98 colour scheme to be way too over-bright. I vote to keep it, or atleast make it optional.
