well i don't know about ms word. i don't think that can be done. i know that you can perform a net send. that is assuming the messenger service is turned on for both computers.

just drop down to a command prompt and do net send computername message.

ie: net send desktop hello can you see this message?

since this is in the Windows XP thread i'm guessing the computers are running windows xp... if so only possible way without getting an external program from the net would be Net Send. and thats only if the messenger service is turned on..

if this is windows ME and below, theres a program with windows called WinPopup. used that in school once but only problem was there were computers running windows NT, when i or my friend would send an IM all the Windows NT machines would get the message and display it much like that of the messenger service dialog...

another possible way.. is to use Netmeeting. that comes with most windows.

you also said.. microsoft word.. what htey maybe doing is just saving over the file..

example... I have the file up for sharing, full access with a password. you come in and change the word document and save it. i reopen it and it shows your text, and just keep doing that.
