For what it's worth (and for reasons that I have no explaination for), things seem to work fine if it's installed after the fact in Windows. I don't get it, I've confirmed that every registry entry is identical to what's there after the hotfix is installed on a clean install, yet things still go to hell every time.

I've confirmed it by integrating by my normal method, integrating with nLite, and with using the plain old /integrate switch. If the hotfix is integrated, you'll see a dialog during the OOBE stage of XP setup asking you to open or save a file. After that, you'll find that IE can't open HTML files or open any websites. (I'll put up some screenshots in a bit).

By any chance did you test running this update as a program install from any of the following?

• CmdLines.txt

• GuiRunOnce

• RunOnceEx

If so, what were your results? Also when you were prompted to save a file, do you remember which file? I'm wondering if there could perhaps be a integration conflict similar to how KB885835 and KB885250 gave us fits?

I'm away from my test machine this week so I can't test this myself right now.

I haven't attempted running the EXE during Windows setup via any of those methods. My hunch is that things would work OK, though.

I'm almost positive it's not a conflict of some sort since all my tests have been with ISOs with no other hotfixes integrated at all. Just SP2 and KB912945.

I've attached a few screenshots to show the problems it causes.

#1 shows what happens when the OOBE Wizard attempts to launch prior to the first login.

I don't have a screenshot for it, but IE is also unable to open HTML files. It just shows a blank browser.

dont know whats you problem ryan ^^ here with my german updatepack and integrating this hotfix all does work great! no popup during oobe and ie can access the internet like every time!

1.) Those tweaks haven't changed since 905915, when everything worked fine.

2.) If I'm using /integrate, those tweaks should be applied when the exe is called by svcpack.inf.

3.) So maybe it's an issue only with the English version?

have you tested to apply this update when it is first logon after installation of Windows?

I mean, use the [GuiRunOnce] of winnt.sif and don't use the integration.

I said in my first post on the issue that installing it after the fact seems to work fine. Read what I say carefully.

I'll say this one last time and then I give up: all I ever said was that using nLite or the /integrate switch to directly integrate KB912945 would hose IE. I made no comments about other installation methods after the fact other than that they seem to work OK, but I haven't completely confirmed that.

Hi all, I currently leave WMP9 on on my install cd and integrated all the wmp patches including the new wmp10 one using /integrate.

Since then my wmp on fresh install is corrupt.

Is there a way to unintegrate one hotfix?

Alternatively would integrating wmp10 on top fix this?

If I integrate wmp10 do I then need to reintegrate all wmp hotfixes?

For what it is worth ... I tried XPCREATE with this as a "HotFix" (meaning integrated into the source manually, as I have always done, and as Microsoft described so long ago), and got basically the same errors as RyanVM. I then tried adding it as a "ColdFix", meaning simply installing it via SVCPACK.INF, without the prior integration, and that seemed to work fine (limited testing). So, in XPCREATE, it would go in the SVC-CF1 directory.

Yeah, I think the ultimate moral of the story is that KB912945 needs to be installed as an exe rather than by the /integrate switch or any other integration method which involves directly overwriting files on the CD. For what it's worth, some people on my forum determined that mshtml.dll is the root cause of the problem.

I've been in touch with my contacts at MS, so hopefully the right people are being made aware of the issue for either an updated hotfix or (probably more likely) a fix in time for the next cumulative security update. I can't make any promises since it's out of my control, but at least the right people are finding out about it :)
