Is There A Direct Link To 98se Ie Sp1 Download?

Recommended Posts

Is there a Direct link to 98SE IE SP1 download somewhere? I see that it is 12.4 MB I would rather download that then the 70+ MB on the microrsoft website.

Also, I was looking on this site: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IOL How many of these updates fixes do I need fr IE 6?

If I need all these fixes I hope someone has come up with UNofficial IE 6 SP update.

You looked @ the right page, but here is the link to d/l full MS IE 6.0 SP1 English [77.5 MB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#6S1

or here:

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#IEX

About an IE6SP1 service pack:

very easy to do with a couple of INF and batch files as long as u have all Qxxxxxx files, but the tough part is that MS posts security updates almost every month [so far the only break they took was March 2005].

Other things to consider:

98, 98SE + ME OSes are not supported anymore, except for critical security patches, which are posted only @ windowsupdate.com, and that will last for only 1 more year. After that there will be NO more 98/ME patches, period.

So it's a pain in the neck to hunt down the links [i know, I'm hunting down their patch links for over 6 years :)]. If u have ever visited my IE patches page [ http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm ], you'll understand what I mean.

Also, MS takes sometimes months until they post 98/ME patches @ windowsupdate.com, long after they have been initially released for all other supported OSes: 2000 SP3/2000 SP4, XP + 2003.

Another annoyance: they do not test enough some of those patches and new security flaws are discovered every month, so they keep updating them over and over, to replace older/buggy ones.

Of course, I'm also using IE 6.0 SP1 files from XP SP2 + 2003 SP1 RC2, which should be included in such a service pack, if any1 ever makes 1, but that's another story.

On the other hand, if you decide to d/l all files [there are only 10 patches for IE 6.0 SP1 running on Win98 SE, and that includes MS OE 6.0 SP1] from my IE page and then install them, it will take u probably 10-15 min, depending on how fast your internet connection is.

The catch is not to reboot after installing each 1, but after installing the last 1.

Same goes for WMP9 [and the files u can use from XP SP2, WMP9 for XP + WMP10 on 98SE/ME]:

http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I saw that file. My connection is bad so that kind of file is very, very difficult to bring down. I will try to download it from the XP side (I mainly use Linux) using a download manager.

What I am going to expand next I hope you take it correctly as constructive criticism. I have used Windsos for years, but not programming but only using the applications. When Microsoft says the servcice pack is 79 mb and your says it is 77.5 mb it thorws guys like me for a loop. Not only that your link is toward the bottom of your page so that is also confusing when you say certain patches have to be installed in a certain order. Also, you have NT, XP patches mixed into your page. I am to download those, also?

I have no problem following a recipe if it is laid out in a logical sequence. I just learned how to format and partition my Windows side for the first time by following a simple step by step tutorial which I just found on the internet. I have been able to partition my Linux for years since I had it explain in a logical sequence (plus Linux is just plain easier and less picky). So what I am saying is what your page really needs, for the noncomputer whiz like me, is a list of what you need to install in numerical order (step 1, step 2, etc) with the corresponding link.

soldier1st - Thanks for the reply. From what I understand about gmail is that they don't allow exe. files to be shipped over the internet as a virus control measure. I do have an account but i will try slipping this thing first.

I always accept constructive criticism... [insert smiley here]

My IE 5/6 patches page [ http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm ] is for all Win32 OSes that MS still supports patching for, including 98, 98 SE, ME, NT4 [critical only] + 2000 SP3, 2000 SP4, XP and 2003. But each patch link specifies exactly which MS Win32 OS and IE or OE (Outlook Express) build + Service Pack (SP) they are meant for.

Example:

- MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 2003 [xx MB]:

link_to_specific_file

- MS IE 6.0 SP2 Patch for Windows XP SP2 [xx MB]:

link_to_specific_file

- MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 2000 SP3/2000 SP4/XP SP1 [xx MB]:

link_to_specific_file

- MS IE 6.0 SP1 Patch for Windows 98/98 SE/ME [xx MB]:

link_to_specific_file

- MS IE 5.5 SP2 Patch for Windows ME [xx MB]:

link_to_specific_file

- MS IE 5.01 SP4 Patch for Windows 2000 SP4 [xx MB]:

If you'd like to learn more about Win9x/ME OSes releases/builds/versions, please see:

http://www.mdgx.com/win.htm

and:

http://www.mdgx.com/ver.htm

So all u need to do is click on the link "for Windows 98/98 SE/ME", which in this case means same file for all these 3 OSes.

I assumed that u need to install all IE 6.0 SP1 available patches for Win98SE, because this entire forum is dedicated exclusively to 98SE.

Conclusion: d/l all patches marked for "Windows etc/98/98 SE/etc" or "Windows 98 SE/ME" (most frequent examples).

Last time I looked there were 10 such patches [but unfortunately that # will change next month].

Also, at the top of that page [under "IMPORTANT:"], it says that newest patches are at the top and oldest at the bottom, so they are all listed in reverse chronological order, which means u should install oldest 1st and move on up from there. But that's not actually necessary in most cases, because older MS patches will almost never install over older ones, because the advanced INF install code [built into advpack.dll] won't allow it, and even if u try to install older on top of newer, it will prompt u [yes / no dialog box] to keep the newer, which u should always do. And I've already done the work, so u won't find any duplicates [which would replace the same file with different builds], all are newest builds available.

And of course, if using IE 6.0 SP1 on Win98SE, u only need to d/l the patches that apply to your particular OS + IE build. The way MS builds patch detection, u can't install wrong ones even if u want to.

79 MB vs 77.5 MB:

this particular file is probably built using a different compression ratio than the other 1 u mention and/or using a different archiving format [well said randiroo76073], like ZIP, 7Z, RAR, CAB, ACE etc.

If u use an archive extraction tool like PowerArchiver or WinZip (trial shareware) [more like these @ http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP = 99.9% free(ware)] to view archive contents, and eventually extract files, run setup.exe, see CAB contents etc, u can even tell what kind of compression algorithm those people used to build the 77.5 MB file.

If you're not comfortable with d/l-ing from that particular site, u can always check out the best: Browser Archive:

http://browsers.evolt.org/

These guys keep all builds ever released of every browser ever made [almost].

The only thing I can't do anything about is your connection speed. If u connect @ ~ 56k, your d/l time is probably in the astronomical range, and I pity you, because most IE patches are 1 - 3 MB. :(

BTW: I'm no programmer either [don't even have any computing qualifications], I'm just a self-taught computer freak, like most everybody else here. ;)

If u just learned how to partition, u probably still have a long way to go, I've started "fooling around" with my 1st PC about 13 years ago... cr&*p, am I that old?

If u plan on learning more about your PC, I recommend a decent place to start:

http://www.mdgx.com/

oops... that's my site. :D

I specialize [my main hobby is computing as I'm sure u already noticed] in DOS, 3.x, 95, 98/98SE, ME, 2000, XP tricks, guides, software, patches, upgrades etc [everything at my site is free for personal use, I hate shareware/adware/spyware and the likes], just browse around a bit, if u don't find anything u like, feel free to leave @ any time, there're plenty other sites I link to if u wish to learn something about computing. Enjoy the tour.

Hope this helps.

Well it appears that you were insulted by my frustration and constructive criticism. That was not my intent. All these links are confusing  to the novice, like you were some 13 years ago. I am trying to learn and I do appreciate your site and the service pack as I have recommeded it on Scot's Newsletter and to other people I know who use Win98SE. Thanks for your help. :thumbup

hey bud it is in a rar archive not exe if you needed to know.

Okay, I don't know what that means but I presume it is another form of zip. How would I extract that?

Look for my PM.

When you need to send large files to someone you might try this service, it's free, send up to 1gb : http://s26.yousendit.com/

Hope this helps someone :D

Thanks for the link.

Looks like gmail is not a good alternative. I think i found a person who will download/burn me a copy. Thanks

With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 10 megabytes (MB) in size. However, the precise amount allowable will depend on the attachment. When you add an attachment, the size of a file may increase because transport encodings are automatically added. (Transport encodings are the information that allows your message to be safely sent and read.) This means that in some cases, attachments that are 6 to 10MB in size may push the total message size above 10MB. When this happens, Gmail displays a warning that your message exceeds the 10MB limit.

Well let's see if this will change my status around here. This is a direct link that I found (by the hand of God) while trying to download the big 77.5 MB file again. . . which was another flop:

http://www.greenapple.com/support/software/browsers/

application: Internet Explorer v6.0sp1 July 2003 Update

platform: Win98/Me/2000/XP

file: ie60sp1july.exe

size: 47.1MB (48235520)

date: 07/06/03

I was able to download this file without the connection turning off. Now that I have contributed to the forum . . . could I please get to you give me the direct links in a reply for the 10 updates (in their install order) you said are for Win 98SE - IE 6 as I don't seem to get the same number as you?

Niiice....

IE has a base requirement of Windows, then it wants a 50+ MB download, then it will use 200 MB on the HDD, then it wants upto 5 MB of updates every month, and constant fiddling with settings for security?

Cool, so NOW I understand why I decided IE was not for me.

@Shamgar

Please do not take what I say as negative criticism, rather it is just a fact....

1. IE is useless. As such, links to it is not quite a "contribution".

2. Windows is usable only in the post XP+SP2 versions - win98 REALLY has lasted its planned life.

3. If you use IE on Win9x, you are wasting your time. Everyone agrees on this.

Having said that, let me also say that actually Win98 and WinME are not a bad OS at all. Most of those OSes' bothers get cleared by a firm move to firefox or opera.

Personally, I think opera is the best choice. Throw out IE, don't use it, don't care about it, don't update it, delete all shortcuts to it..... and use an alternative browser for everything.

Download 3.5 MB once, and get a mail client, chat, and browser. This browser has a good interface for beginners, has every possible feature you can think of for experts, has an infinitely customizable and extendable UI, can be voice-controlled, and more..... It has thousands of features and easy-usability facilities that keeps growing softly on you as you use more of it. And the best part is that even if you forget to update it for 4 years, you will still be safer than a stone - it literally has almost no security problems. If you need more reasons to use opera, I have posted hundreds on this topic all over this forum and in other places.

@MDGx

You've got a wonderful site man! So much info that I couldn't finish reading it all, even in 3 days! Its been hugely useful to me, and I've seen it being mentioned whenever/wherever there's any thing about tweaking windows. Keep it up :thumbup

Thanks for the reply. Actually I use Firefox on both the hardrives on my internet computer along with Thunderbird. Opera and Konqueror are my other options for Linux but I mainly use Foxfire. I very seldom go to the windows XP side only to use the printer and open a few thing that Linux cannot.

That being said I am trying to follow the recommendation of @MDGx for his Unoffical Windows 98SE Service Pack/98lite on my noninternet computer that has Win98se. In fact I saw a link that was talking about building a live cd with 98 that did not use IE. I would like to build a similar cd and I would use Firefox.

Thanks for the link. . . thisis the message I received when trying your link.

Ha! It's not so easy:

you should know which files do you need and add to this url, for example:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6...-US/IEMIL_1.CAB

Thanks, what Ireally need is for someone to give me the links for the IE 6 found here:

[ http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm ] There are supposed to be ten and I don't come up with that number.

So if you decipher my ten and give me the links

I would be grateful.
