Philip Cummings, right, and his sister Jean exit federal court in New York after Cummings' bail hearing on Monday.

In what is seen as the biggest identity theft case in US history, federal authorities apprehended Phillip Cummings, a former computer help desk worker, along with some associates. They are accused of stealing from more than 30,000 people.

Cummings, who worked for a software company, is accused of selling passwords and codes to enable people to steal peoples' consumer credit reports. Credit reports were stolen from Experian (15,000 of them) and numerous other credit bureaus.

Cummings is alleged to have sold the reports for $30 each. Victims of this fraud saw unauthorized transactions on their credit cards in the thousands. The next step now is to unmask who used these credit reports to profit from them.
