Microsoft Admits Patch Ms05-002 Problem!

Recommended Posts

Microsoft has admitted that users who installed the security patch for Windows 98 and ME in January are suffering from slower machines or frozen screens as a result. The MS05-002 patch was issued by Microsoft for the Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME operating systems as part of its monthly patching cycle.

The problem relates to the way the Internet Explorer browser works with the operating system. Removing the patch returns the machine to normal performance but leaves users open to security vulnerabilities, although Microsoft said it had not yet received any reports of exploits of these vulnerabilities.

Actually Rhelic, the MS05-002 security updates for Win98 & ME were released on March 8, 2005. Microsoft security bulletin MS05-002 was posted in mid January 2005 but back then the Win98/ME MS05-002 updates were NOT available at Windows Update.

The Win98/ME MS05-002 KB891711 updates also conflict with certain proxy and firewall software AND can cause BSOD errors when trying to startup Win98/ME.

Please see these DSLReports.com forum pages on the problems the MS05-002 updates cause for Windows 98 & ME systems:

Oh no, I fully understand MS wants you to upgrade into a new OS. Which is why I have used this service pack. MS doesn't want to make the improvements into 98 because they are giving users reason to use legacy OSs.

Although I'm not going to defend 98SE at all, even with this patch installed. I'm dead sold on the NT 5.x kernel. I just figure if you have a box where you must run 98, might as well have all the improvements.

</rant>

But now we're on a whole different subject.

In MS's defenese, they can't afford to have a massive teams of top notch developers without a constant flow of cash, hence new versions MUST keep coming.

Don't hate on Microsoft for needing money, they obviously can't stay in business by selling the same OS for 10 years.

I feel real bad for Bill Gates, he's down to his last 40 BILLION

40 BIL huh? mou-ha-ha-ha!

well Bill and company better find a way to fix the problems the MS05-002 security updates for Windows 98/ME have caused for many 98 & ME users.

And the MS05-002 security updates for Windows NT4, 2000, XP & Server 2003 do NOT have those problems the Windows 98/ME versions have.

Microsoft has admitted to the problems the first release of the MS05-002 security updates for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium have caused. But recently they have posted new releases of these updates.

Those using Windows ME click on the following link:

Those using Windows 98 click on the following link:

So far, nobody on the net has reported problems with the newly re-released MS05-002 Win98/WinME security updates.
