oops! wrong info in my post just below

Sorry...in my post just below about deleted IE5 files, I said I could not get them out of my recycle bin. I meant to say my Disk Cleanup tool (which lists recycle bin, as you know) and the files are listed in the Temporary Internet Files. This is why I could not just click 'Restore'.

I cannot get those files out of Disk Cleanup...they refuse to be moved back, or deleted completely. Is there a way to transfer them (though it says they can't be moved) or should I just say the heck with it. There is also a DC67 folder (i think thats the name) that has been in Disk Cleanup for a year that I cannot get back to where it belongs. Any tips?

Also, I erroneously duplicated a file folder in my C/MyComputer tree...they are 100% the same but I can't delete one of them because it is an essential file. Is there a way to do this?

Sorry about the incorrect info before

Once again, thanks for any help,

jotho

I cannot get those files out of Disk Cleanup

What does this mean ? There aren't any files or folders listed in the Disk Cleanup utility. There are just generic boxes to tick.

I understand you maybe unable to delete some of the content of your recycle even after reboot. If that's the case you probably have got some disk errors and should run scandisk from dos and fix all the errors it finds.

If this does not cure your problem you might have partition table or FAT errors. I don't know how to fix that besides wiping the drive, format with fdisk and reinstall the OS.

If that's not your problem be more precise please.

eidenk, or anyone else that may have a suggestion...

Regarding my "I cannot get those files out of Disk Cleanup" comment: In the Disk Cleanup utility you can click on one of those 'generic boxes' you mention (in this case, the one marked 'temp. inter.files') and then click on 'view files'...then the folders and files that are listed in the clicked box will be shown. Those are the files to which I am referring.

As i have attempted to explain (albeit, unclearly at first), when I do the above, I see 8 folders (with names such as 69uboluv and shi7klmb, all with properties:

C/windows/temporary internet files/content.IE5) and one file marked 'index.dat' and one marked 'desktop', also having the same properties.

I had upgraded to IE 6.0, and, due to my PC naivete, assumed that any files marked 'temporary internet files IE 5' could be deleted. I deleted all the above mentioned folders and files but they are now showing up repeatedly in Disk Cleanup, in the category 'Temporary Internet Files' (after I click on 'view files'). I should mention here that for convenience I use the Disk Cleanup tool solely, rather than clicking on 'Recycle Bin', and have ALL the categories checked so that I may cleanup and delete everything in one action (I hope that made sense).

Now, after using said Disk Cleanup, I notice that 5 of the 8 folders mentioned are gone. But that lasts only temporarily, and at a later point the same 8 folders and two files all appear again in the 'Temp. Inter. Files category of Disk Cleanup. Although I am a novice PC user, it would appear to me these files are still required system files since they seem impervious to deletion. Now, if this is the case, how can i get these folders and files back to where they belong so that they no longer keep showing up in Disk Cleanup/Temporary Internet Files? Are these IE5 folders and files actually temporary and unnecessary, or are they required for IE 6.0 to function (I would have though that the upgrade would have changed the names of any IE5 files that are still required, so as not to confuse the user (silly me, right?).

Also, a second question...through my quick-click blundering I have duplicated a folder on my C/ file tree (sorry, don't know the tech. name for this 'file tree') and when I try to right-click and delete the copy I get a refusal because it is a system file and cannot be deleted (even though there is an exact copy of it sitting right next to it). Is there a way of deleting a accidently duplicated system file without screwing things up??

Thanks all, and I hope I have been clear enough with my info...my original post was on my first day of membership in the forum, so I'm a little green yet, and my PC knowledge is very limited.

listen...I already told you in detail in another post you did on same subject the files are not needed.

The temp internet files regenerate themselves automatically so don't worry they come back!!

get over and past it...

If you are that much of a novice, don't be playing with folders, etc..you can delete them is DOS, but don't worry about it - it's permanent and if you mess up....

Learn and enjoy your PC first.

there are lots of good newsgroups for newbies....search the web for learning the OS you have.

It does not seen we have the same disk cleanup utility as I can't access any files like you say with mine. Maybe this is because I am using ME and you are using 98.

due to my PC naivete, assumed that any files marked 'temporary internet files IE 5' could be deleted.

There is usually no problem with deleting those files as there is there only webpages you have visited and some cookies. You can set the size of this folder in Control Panel\Internet Options\Temporary Internet Files\Settings and clean it up from there as well. Or you can open the Temporary Internet Files folder in Windows. Select all and delete.

That sounds extremely weird to me. What is the name of this folder that you have copied and can't be deleted anymore because windows tells you it is a system file ?

in 98, there is a view button, lower right if the cleanup dialog (except if selecting temp files)...it takes one to Windows Explorer if clicked....

Again, as jothro is a self proclaimed newbie and very naive, I'd suggest he/she not mess with anything...until he/she learns the OS a bit by researching, reading, getting on forums, etc...

@jasinwa

Apologies. I was all wrong. There is indeed a view button as well were you say in ME. I just never use those tools apart from scandisk. But all does this button is open the Temporary Internet Files folder. And everything gets removed exept from some cookies in this folder by using the built in disk cleanup.

So I would say that jothro has probably disk errors and should run scandisk from DOS to begin with.
