Windows 95 revamped

Hi Guys,

Firstly let me explain, I recently created a multi-boot DVD, it contains 98se, ME, XP and SLAX Live CD. I did this using a guide I found here on MSFN, whilst doing this I realised I could slipstream the XP service pack and the updates the the DVD and also the drivers into 98se and autorun the nice unoficial 98se service pack to windows 98.

However, I have an old dusty copy of windows 95c and I hate to see things go to waste (I also have my windows 3.11 disks which I am thinking about putting in the DVD). I cant install the cd with any new PC so I want to patch the install cd with the AMD fix, I am sure I read how to do this ages ago but cant find the instructions anywhere. Does anyone know how to do this?

Also I would like to add my new drivers, the infinst prog wont allow me to add any 32bit drivers and I cant use the win98 one on anything other than win98 (doing this for Millenium would be nice too). Anyone who knows how to do this please tell me?

Lastly I would love to add DirectX and IE5.5 (i think thats the last available IE for 95?) and possibly the hotfixes so that I have a final be all and end all never updated again win95 installer.

Anyone who can help me with this?

PS. I know 95 is dead, I do not intend to seriously use it but would love to preserve it for posterity.

95c does indeed support fat32 system, essentially the main break between 95 and 98 is between 95b and 95c. You can even do things like remove all of the stuff like the ISP vendor stuff, etc.

You can indeed get win95c oem to install from a cdrom, in non (rebuild system) mode. It's a pretty straight forward hack, involving setupp.inf . You look through the file (there's a whole swag of these files in the first two cabs. You can play around with these).

Look for the string "ProductType=", and it should have a number after it like 0 or 1. Change this to 9, and setup will think it's installing off a floppy disk (ie it won't prompt for a product id, and it won't demand a new hard disk).

I'm not too sure about adding your own drivers in the install. Never tried it.

But i have a copy of 98c with great swags of useless stuff trimmed out of it. :)

thanks that gives me a great start, there are loads of options in there to add lines to msdos.sys and copy inf files so I will play around now that I have a starting point.

Cheers
