Ok, the 98fe service pack project is now being resumed.

Unofficial Win98 standard edition SP version 2.2.0 (no longer available)

changes:
-added DirectX6 Media
-msvbvm60.dll v6.0.9798 from KB930828
-msvcrt.dll v6.1.9848.0 from Win2000 SP4 KB932590 hotfix
-OLE Automation 2.40.4530 (KB917423) with oleaut32.dll 2.40.4519 (KB924053/MS07-043) security fix
-updated canyon.mid & passport.mid files from Win2000
-flourish.mid, onestop.mid & town.mid files from WinME/XP/Vista
-new Root Certificates update
-new unofficial Aug. 2007 DST update
-updated dhtmled.ocx & triedit.dll files from Windows Server 2003 SP2
-updated Tahoma truetype fonts from Windows Server 2003 SP2
-MSE/Windows Script 5.6 build 8832 from Windows Server 2003 SP2
-updated USP10.DLL file version 1.422.3790.3959 from Windows Server 2003 SP2

known issues:
-a reminder that this SP is for English Win98fe systems only. installing this SP on non-English Win98 FE systems may cause unforseen problems.

-If unofficial MSE 5.7 is installed under Win98 FE and the unofficial 98fe SP is being
installed the SP will overwrite MSE 5.7 with MSE 5.6 build 8832 from the SP. Also the
SP may prevent the installation of older releases of unofficial MSE 5.7 under Win98 FE
because unofficial MSE 5.7 detects certain versions of some MSE files that may not
qualify for the installation of unofficial MSE 5.7. Don't worry, the next scheduled
release of the 98fe SP coming later this month will include MSE 5.7. Also, you can
download and install a revised version of the unofficial MSE 5.7 addon if you can't
wait for the next release of the SP. You will need to re-install Unofficial MSE 5.7
after installing Unofficial 98fe SP v2.2.0.

Is "DirectX6 Media" useful if DirectX 9.0c is installed ?

sort of. DX6 Media includes a few stuff that are not included in DirectX 9.0c such as DirectAnimation (though IE 5.x has newer DirectAnimation files than DX6M), WMP 6.0 and the Intel Indeo codecs. Win98 FE originally has so many outdated components, especially older DX Media files that DX6 Media is pretty much essential under Win98 FE.

Unofficial Windows 98 FE SP version 2.3.0 posted here:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/driv...FESP230EN-R.EXE

changes-

-replaced MSE (WSH) 5.6 with MSE (WSH) 5.7
-added MDAC 2.1 (from IE 5.x)
-added Unofficial MS Paint Graphic Filters pack
-added DirectX6 Media "DirectAnimation" fixes
-fixed minor installation problem when installing the updated dsound.dll file for DirectX 7
-removed option of installing TTF Font Properties Extension; this release installs it when installing the Win98fe fixes
-added option of installing the WinME Defrag, RegEdit and Scandskw tools
-added permanent 891711 user*.* 4.10.2003 fix

Starting from v2.2.0, the Win98fe SPs are pretty much AIOs (all-in-ones); hence the sizes of the 98fe SPs are quite bigger (hey, the SPs for Win2000/XP/2003 are at least 100Mb in size compared to the size of the 2.2 & 2.3 releases of the 98fe SP)

Hello erpdude8

Thank you for this new Service Pack :thumbup

As I'm translating this pack in french, I wish to add...

1) I noticed that a little mistake is appeared in the spupdate.inf file since the 2.20 version.
" DelFiles = DelDel.uninstall "

2) Logically, this SP replace the first (and alone official) Service Pack. Why adding some code to remove the SP1's file (csp.cab, csp.cat, %winbootdir%\$...UninstallUpdate98...$ and reg keys like uninstall) ?

3) Why did you remove Metapad from SP 2.2 ? A Service Pack isn't cumulative ? SP 2.08 contains this software and the later SPs not.

Q230791 is only needed if you actually use Firewire devices and that you have an IEEE 1394/Firewire expansion card installed to your computer and you use a firewire cable to connect your devices. I know for sure Sony computers have built-in Firewire/1394 ports. Even with Q230791 installed, Firewire support in 98fe is still weak and most 1394 devices really require at least 98 SE with Q242975 patch installed.

MS article Q230791 has been removed from MS support site, ditto with the Q230791 hotfix.

I won't bother retrying my requests for hotfixes Q254087, Q265528 & Q329128. I'll assume MS support scrapped these fixes for good, even though their KB articles are still posted.

Hi, erpdude8!

As you already know, the files for Win 98SE from Q329128 have recently surfaced in SESP30-alpha-1 and remain present in alpha-2. They are NDIS.VXD 4.10.0.2226; PPPMAC.VXD 4.10.0.2223 and VIP.386 4.10.0.2228, of course. But Q329128 also carries fixes for Win 98FE and ME. Yet, both in his anouncement and in the spupdate.inf included in SESP30-alpha-1, Gape refers to those files as if they were part of Q301453. And while both MSKB articles pertain to "multicast packets that have a TTL setting of 0 (zero)", Q301453 is for Win 2k/XP, while Q329128 is the correct article number for Win 9x/ME, and only Q329128 contains the above mentioned files. It is a fact that Q301453 points to Q329128 and vice-versa, but I don't see the point in referring to it in such a roundabout way. It is great that those files are now available, after everybody sought them for so long. And VIP.386 4.10.0.2228 IS better than 4.10.0.2227, for in some way the system becomes less resouce-hungry when 2228 is installed. I can't help but wonder whether Gape has the complete Q329128 or if he just found its files for Win 98SE somewhere. Gape, :hello: would you please be so kind as to enlighten us? You rock, both of you! Without your continued endeavours, our computing experience would be so much the poorer.
Keep on the good work! :thumbup Win 9x/ME forever!

I was supposed to release v2.4.0 of the english 98fe SP on Halloween but I'm postponing it until MDGx creates unofficial DST 943000 update for Win9xME. I'm removing the user*.* 4.10.2003 files from the 98fe SP and reverting back to putting the kb891711.exe and q891711.dll files and the user*.* 4.10.2001 files due to software conflicts with Tihiy's RP pack.

dencorso, if you want the actual Q329128 hotfixes for other 9x systems like 98fe and ME you could try phoning Microsoft support for them since they may not offer them by email. Give MS a call and see what you can get from them. Tips on how to call Microsoft support mentioned here:

What CONTROL.EXE v4.10.2000 fix???
If you mean v4.10.1999 have care, because it is problematic.
Both fastlanephil and myself have had system lock-ups due to it. It's reported here.

Keep on the great work! :thumbup

fixed the typo. control.exe v4.10.1999 doesn't seem to cause lockups under Win98 FE since I do not use 98SE2ME and 98se2me is not compatible with 98FE.

A little off topic but regarding my recent problems with requesting Q301453 for WinME, I now got them for both English and Italian editions and MS gave me the right links for them.

Big Monstro may want to ask for the French edition of Q301453 for Win98 whenever he's not busy.

I'm almost ready to release version 2.5.0 of the 98fe service pack which will come in two editions: a full and a lite edition. They will be posted after Valentine's Day.

Full edition is about 50Mb while the Lite edition is around 27Mb.

Now I know the problems (random system-wide lock-ups) fastlanephil and I were experiencing were due to the now known incompatibility between CONTROL.EXE v4.10.1999 and 98SE2ME. Now I'm using v.4.90.0.3001 without any problems (Thanks erpdude8 and MDGx!). But I think I should write this to dispel any doubts I may have caused: CONTROL.EXE v4.10.1999 is perfectly safe for Win 98FE.

Keep on the great work! :thumbup

Whoops. I apologize for postponing the 2.50 release once again (hey I have good reasons why I have to delay the release) since I found some recent but minor problems with them. They should be ready by early March for sure once I finish testing them and I've fixed those minor problems that I recently found.

Ah at last, version 2.50 is finally here!

Unofficial Win98 FE SP 2.50 Full Edition - link removed

Unofficial Win98 FE SP 2.50 Lite Edition - link removed

Changes:
-removed DX6MEDIA.EXE file
-updated JSCRIPT.DLL to version 5.7.0.20550
-added WUPDMGR.EXE file version 5.3.220.1000
-updated NDIS.VXD, PPPMAC.VXD & VIP.386 files from Q301453/Q329128
-fixed minor install problem with the OE4 SP1 (Outlook Express 4.x) updates
-updated Time Zone entries from Q942763 and Root Certificates [ROOTSUPD.EXE]
-updated WMP 6.4 install package which now bundles updated DX6 Media codecs

Known issues/Problems:
-version 4.10.2003 of the PPPMAC.VXD file included in the 2.50 Full & Lite releases (and from the Q301453/Q329128 hotfix for Win98) is incompatible with Win98's NetBEUI protocol. If you install v2.50 of the 98fe SP on a Win98 first edition machine with the NetBEUI protocol already installed, Win98 will freeze/hang on the DOS screen [black screen with blinking cursor] and never load the Win98 desktop. To resolve this problem, boot Win98 into Safe Mode, access the Network control panel dialog box, remove/un-install the NetBEUI protocol and reboot Win98 into Normal mode. OR you can use an older version of the PPPMAC.VXD file (version 4.10.2002 or earlier) if you really need to use the NetBEUI protocol.

Also if you install the NetBEUI protocol from the Network control panel applet with version 4.10.2003 of PPPMAC.VXD already installed, Win98 will crash with a Blue Screen error message referencing the PPPMAC.VXD file and Win98 will stop working altogether after NetBEUI protocol installation.

:blushing: This may seem silly -What is major differences between your full and lite packages for 98fe-sp2?*As i'm planning on using 98Upgrade Cdrom to install on older system as 98SE takes up too much room and Ram is between 32 and maybe 64 mb's.Hdd is4.3gb with ethernet, no usb, yet.An old Creative cd-cdrom and floppy Either ViaApollo233mmx with PII233mhz/cpu or Intel Desktop810 with celeron467mhz/cpu...***This system will be for using me older appl's like win3.1-98SE not compatible with newer systems....oh yeah Dos 5.0-6.2 was upgraded.Like MSDos 5.0 but 'tis slow. Will add USB When find card as none available at this time....thx,thydreamwalker :sneaky:

The addons that are included in the full edition of 98fe-sp2 like DirectX7, WBEM/WMI 1.5, MDAC 2.5 SP3, etc. These are left out in the lite edition of the service pack.

Version 2.52 - no longer available

Changes:
-updated DSTUPD.EXE & ROOTSUPD.EXE
-updated Unofficial Graphics Filters pack that contains updated graphics filters from Office 2003 SP3
-added SERVICES file from the SERVIC9X package
-added MSIMG32.DLL file from WinME (this is required to run Opera browser v9.5x under Win98)
-added VNETBIOS.VXD v4.90.3001 file from unofficial Q272991 patch for Win98
-added the Windows Script 5.7 installation option in the service pack install dialog box
