Improved MODE.COM, also part of FreeDOS [65 KB, free GPL]:

To learn how to use it, run:
mode /? | more
or:
mode /? > modecmd.txt
and then open modecmd.txt in Notepad.
Works with any version of DOS + Windows 3.x/9x/ME.
Doesn't probably work with WinNTx [NT/2000/XP/2003/Longhorn] because these OSes don't allow direct access to hardware the way DOS + Win9x/ME do.
If using WinNTx u need its own mode.com found usually in %windir%\system32 .
