I have never used 98SE2ME.
Is it compatible with the Win98SE SP3 beta4?
What kind of improvement will I get if I install it in addition?
I have read the READ1ST.PHP, but not seems to speak about this particular point.
To my knowledge there have never been problems installing these 2 packages.
I strongly recommend to install SP2 3.0 beta 4 first, and then 98SE2ME, as stated in READ1ST.TXT under the "FAQ" section [read1st.php is just a "wrapper" web page for the .TXT file]:
http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/read1st.php
Quote
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
MUST be installed BEFORE installing 98SE2ME options 1, 2, 3 or 5 because all
Win98 SE system files installed by Unofficial SP2 listed below are REPLACED
by 98SE2ME with SAME BUILD, NEWER and/or PATCHED (WinME) versions [this may
change in future releases], but this should NOT affect operating system
compatibility NOR stability...
FYI:
Just to be safe, select to backup your entire OS [when you install option 1 or 2], if you have never installed 98SE2ME before:
http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/98setome.gif
If everything works ok, you can always delete the backup later: pls see READ1ST.TXT for complete details under the "BACKUP + RESTORE WINDOWS 98 SE" section.

Option 1 is running but the icons are broken in the systray,
and at every reboot the OS is looking for a folder 92SM (don't remenber the exact name) in /Windows/ or /WINDOWS/SYSTEM/ that he does'nt find...
Option 3 had crashed everything (error with SHELL32.dll at reboot) and I needed to restore the system with DriveImage.

98SE2ME French edition is not my work. It was created by Matze (MSFN user) a while back.
You can probably contact him at:
http://www.matze.fr/post/2008/09/13/98SE2M...nts-FR-12122007
Now that I know about the errors, I'll remove it from my site until Matze can fix it.
Thanks a lot for your concern.

Matze is doing a lot of work on his site.
He had translated several version of Win 98SE SP2 & SP3 with no problem.
Could it has been something with my PC (or settings)?
I had copied the 'win9x' folder from Win Me install CD on my HD (C:\WINDOWS\Desktop) [I think the .pif read everything from it],
and the original CD was still in the first optical drive (E:)

Anyway... 98SE2ME.EXE [most recent edition = December 2009 (this may or may not be true for 2 years old editions)] must be run first in order to install all needed files [which are extracted from the executable], which always install in the C:\9!M folder.
From then on you can run the PIF file [98SE2ME.PIF] from C:\9!M to install any option you wish from the main menu.
Your copy of Windows 98 SE OS can be anywhere on any hard drive/partition that can be written to.
The WinME setup CAB files [all of them] can be anywhere [but all must be in the same directory], on any drive that is connected to your computer, and that you have access to and which have file systems [FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, CDFS, UDF] Win98 SE can recognize.
That's all I can think of off of the top of my head.
IMO:
You'd be better off installing the new 98SE2ME [December 2009]:
http://www.mdgx.com/4
even if it has only English files, because most bugs have been fixed since 2007 [and you'll get newer files], and to see if everything works ok.
Just select to backup your entire Windows OS at install time. Options 1 or 2 give you a backup choice, which is recommended, especially if you have never installed 98SE2ME before.
If you wish to install option 3, your original files will be backed up automatically, so you can restore them in case somthng goes weird.
If you have installed 98SE2ME before, then the backup routine will only backup the WinME files, not the originals.

I haven't tested RP or Kx for a long time [both were old editions], but I've never had problems.
Big HDD actually contains files installed also by 98SE2ME, so it should work 100%.
To be honest, the only Win98 SE OS I've been using [for > 9 years] is the one with 98SE2ME installed.
There is another package similar to Big HDD at my site, if you wish to test, has files installed also by 98SE2ME, and they all work 100%:
http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TLS
* Microsoft Disk Defragmenter (DEFRAG.EXE 4.90.3000 from Windows ME), Hardware
Diagnostic Tool (HWINFO.EXE 4.90.3000 from Windows ME), System Configuration
(MECONFIG.EXE 4.90.3001 from Windows ME Q272719 Hotfix), Disk Scanner
(SCANDSKW.EXE 4.90.3000 + SCANDISK.EXE from Windows ME), Registry Editor
(REGEDIT.EXE 4.90.3000 from Windows ME = modified to work with all Windows
95/98 releases), Registry Scanner (SCANREGW.EXE 4.10.1998 + SCANREG.EXE from
Windows 98 SE), SCANREG.INI Editor [SREDIT.EXE from Windows 98 Resource Kit
(RK)], MSDOS.SYS Editor [BOOTEDIT.EXE 1.0.0.1 from Windows 98 Resource Kit
(RK)], System File Checker (SFC.EXE 4.10.2222 from Windows 98 SE) + File
Manager (WINFILE.EXE 4.10.1999 16-bit from Windows 98 SE Q267375 Hotfix =
modified with custom 256 colors bitmaps + icons) Tools for Windows

This is the relevant part:
[Version] Signature=$CHICAGO$ SetupClass=Base LayoutFile=layout.inf,layout1.inf,layout2.inf [DefaultInstall] AddReg=RegisterDLLs [RegisterDLLs] HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\500","030",2,"%11%\shimgvw.dll|DllRegisterServer"You can save this as IESHELME.INF (in Notepad) and then run it like this:
RUNDLL32 ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\IESHELME.INF,DefaultInstall
[Replace C:\WINDOWS with your own drive letter + WinME install directory if different.]
Just make sure LAYOUT1.INF [also from WinME setup CD-ROM] is in the same directory you run IESHELL.INF from [default would be %windir%\INF].

And both must be from the same OS [WinME in this case], and they must exist inside same directory.
But if you're trying to do this on WinME, there is another way to do this [from within WinME]:
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup tab -> scroll down to Fax + Image Preview [or similar] -> check mark -> OK/Apply.
If that doesn't work, or if you're trying to do this from within 98SE [+ 98SE2ME option 3 installed], just run this command from a DOS box [*not* from the "Run..." Start menu item]:
REGSVR32 %windir%\SYSTEM\SHIMGVW.DLL
If that doesn't work, run this one:
REGSVR32 /I %windir%\SYSTEM\SHIMGVW.DLL
["Run..." from the Start menu doesn't recognize environment variables]
Just make sure SHIMGVW.DLL [from WinME] is already in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
HTH
P.S.
Please let me know if this works with 98SE2ME option 3 installed, so I can add SHIMGVW.DLL to option 3.
Thanks.

2 easy steps...
1. Extract SHIMGVW.DLL from WIN_14.CAB [from WinME setup CD-ROM] into %windir%\SYSTEM [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS] (run this command from a DOS box):
EXTRACT/Y X:\WIN9X\WIN_14.CAB /L %windir%\SYSTEM SHIMGVW.DLL
X = your CD/DVD drive letter. Change if necessary to match your settings.
2. Register it (run this command from a DOS box):
REGSVR32 %windir%\SYSTEM\SHIMGVW.DLL
3. Done .

I can't belive I missed this...
I have just right now installed the shimgvw.dll by the regsvr32... method and now the mypictures folder works...
I forgot I had asked if this was for the preview...
For those having trouble, my laptop is running RP7 and I have lost track of whats installed. RP7 however is the me shell, op3 equiv isnt it.

P.S. actualy, Ill see if I can iron out a script error and you can, if not already, put imgview.htt back into 982me.
