Any help on how I can restore my registry for my display back. My appearance tab is missing now and I am unable to modify my background. My computer got hit by some spyware. I was able to fix most of the damage it caused but one. How do I view or access the registry files? If anyone has a fix or copy of this registry file that will restore it back to its original state I'd really appreciate it.

Cut + paste in Notepad -> save as APPEAR1.REG [or whatever, just keep the REG extension] -> run REG file to merge info into your registry:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispAppearancePage"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispAppearancePage"=dword:00000000

Complete guide to system policies + restrictions:

Hope this helps.

I don't see how one can blame spyware for this. Spyware aims at spying at you in the stealthiest possible way, not at make you notice it is there by disabling system property sheets ;)

Speak about malware or virus maybe but not spyware in this context. Do you at least permanently run an up to date virus scanner as a background task when you browse the net ? If not you should as some websites are able to drop executable files on your disk and run them through IE flaws even with all the IE security fixes applied and script execution disabled. It happened twice to me and fortunately was relatively harmless and quite easy to deal with, just self replicating bargain.exe and assorted dlls. What if they had attacked my FAT ? Brrrr...

Here is a good security forum : deny.de

I have downloaded this there. Good laugh.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorta like the first reply. Found this and it worked for me...

"I can see this being a problem to many people as it has had me pulling my hair out all day, i cant thank the ppl whove posted above enough, i do think it could of been explained better though...

resolving the fake blue screen desktop and missing tabs in the display properties window:

(all words do NOT include the 'quotes')

1) click 'start' then 'run'

2) type in 'regedit'

3) a scary looking thing loads, on the left there is a few folders named HKEY somethingorother, click HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then 'software', then 'microsoft', then 'windows' then 'currentversion', then click 'policies', and finally click 'system'

4) 5 icons should now have appeared on the right (see pic here: http://www.insomniafm.co.uk/upload/files/v...a/regedit1.JPG)

5) double click the files NoDispBackgroundPage and NoDispAppearancePage and change their value from 1 to 0

6) delete the file wallpaper REG_SZ

7) close regedit

hopefully ive been helpful

once again thankyou very much everyone
