I'm having some problems making a .reg file to customize multiple aspects of a XP installation (already shrinked and partially customized with nLite). The Services reg file I've made works fine, but I still need to find the correct keys to do the following:

- Set the taskbar to autohide
- Set the classic start menu to use small icons
- Set the desktop background color to (RGB) 58,110,165
- Enable Advanced Power Management Support
- Turn off ALL the effects in Display Properties > Appearance > Effects
- Turn off ALL the effects in System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Visual Effects
- Set the PageFile to 512/512MB in System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Advanced > Virtual Memory
- Uncheck all the three options in System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Startup and Recovery > System Failure
- Set the System Sounds to No Sounds

Then I really don't know how to integrate into a reg file all the options I set using gpedit.msc. I've tried RegShot to find out which keys are modified but it gets really confusing. What I usually set is this:

Start Menu and Taskbar:
- Remove links and access to Windows Update
- Remove My Documents icon from Start Menu
- Remove Documents menu from Start Menu
- Remove Favorites menu from Start Menu
- Remove Help menu from Start Menu
- Do not keep history of recently opened documents
- Turn off personalized menus
- Turn off user-tracking
- Prevent grouping of taskbar items
- Turn off notification area cleanup
- Remove UserName for Start Menu

Desktop
- Remove My Documents icon from Desktop
- Hide My Network Places icon on Desktop
- Hide Internet Explorer icon on Desktop
- Remove the Desktop Cleanup Wizard
- Disable Active Desktop

Ctrl+Alt+Del options:
- Remove Change Password

Windows Explorer
- Remove Shared Documents from My Computer
- Turn off caching of thumbnail pictures

Windows Update:
- Remove access to all Windows Update features


Basically, if I could turn all these options into a .reg file, I could install a small "nlited" XP, doubleclick (if I need to) two reg files and then it's done, the machine is ready for the user (which usually is one of my relatives) to be customized, software installed and things like that.

I don't remember not seeing all of these here in the forums. Spend plenty of time reading the appropriate sections and you will find out all you need.

There is a search function too, for when you need to look for the more specific stuff!

ill tell u how i did it..

for exampel u want to Disable Active Desktop

Disable Active Desktop


do the reg tweak the long way then on the reg it told u to change right click and click export.

and save the .reg to ur desktop. When you've done a seperate .reg for all of ur tweaks rename the .reg to .txt for all of them and open each one in text pad.

copy all the information below Windows Registry Ediot 5.00 for each one and post it in a seperate txt file when your done copying all the reg tweaks place the Windows Registry editor or w/e thing on the top line and save as regtweaks.reg.

For me personally, if I need to tweak something, I run RegMon/FileMon from Sysinternals or InstallRite, change settings and see where that change applied...

And that's what I did too, but I used RegShot. The point is that even if I find the keys which are modified after the customization process, when I try to import them as a reg file they don't apply (which makes me think that those are not the right keys).

Right now the Services.reg works good, I've found a way to import the settings of gpedit.msc (I just have to copy the whole folder where windows saves those entries), the only thing left is the start menu, the taskbar and some minor things in System (swao file, visual effects and stuff). Thank God I can use VMware to test every ISO I make, otherwise it would be dramatic!
