I've been trying for a unified image for mulitple models (hp Compaq, Dell, Sony, and more) for many months. The first image I built with XP SP1 seemed to boot fine on nearly everything, but with SP2 I've had limited luck. I'm using the Sysprep that came on my XP SP2 CD.

I've tried every combination of HAL, sysprep.ini settings, and reference machine hardware I can think of. Right now I have two images, one made on a PIII with an Advanced Configuration... (ACPI) HAL that boots MOST similar PCs, but not all, and I have another image made on a hp Compaq DC5000 with Uniprocessor ACPI HAL that boots MOST similar PCs as well.

When I image a machine and it fails, it's all determined by whether it gets to the Windows XP splash page or not. If it does, it works fine. If not it either stops at a blinking cursor on black background immediately after BIOS screen (no white NT progress bar, F8 doesn't work, nothing), or it gives a "Disk Read Error" on black background.

I haven't been able to determine for sure if this is a HAL problem, Mass Storage Device problem, or something new I haven't thought of. I've tried every initial HAL, every HAL setting in sysprep.ini, every Mass Storage option (sysprep.exe -bmsd, etc.) and have no luck. I've tried installing the Standard Dual IDE controller. I've tried running sysprep.exe -clean. I've tried removing all PC-specific drivers befrore sysprep. I've tried changing the HAL to Standard PC before sysprep.

Who recognizes these symptoms? Who can suggest a solution? Where do I go to find these answers if not this forum? (I've read about every sysprep related post or article I can find.)

Thanks in advance! -Eric

If memory serves, Sysprep locks the HAL used during configuration to similar systems, and if that system uses a different HAL then it won't work.

This could also happen when on a P4 system specically, you have HT and nonHT systems, and have one image. It won't work as the two system types have conflicting HALs

Alright, that's it for the site for now. Now on to the next project....which could concievable replace the current site :)

HDD controllers can be an issue. Apparently, resetting the drivers to generic drivers for these, before you seal the image, overcomes the issue with them.

Hi,
We had a similar problem. We now have two builds - One PIC HAL (for most of our existing laptops), and an APIC Uniprocessor HAL for some newer laptops and our desktops. Sysprep in XP will automatically upgrade an APIC Uniprocessor HAL to a Multiprocessor (for HT machines).

We did have some major problems with Mass Storage drivers but have since resolved by using the following:

"%LOCALDRIVE%\Sysprep\Sysprep.Exe" -mini -activated -reseal -shutdown -quiet

I wonder why the experts in this forum talked about this proble just today, not years ago...

Being a computer technician since over 10 years I've noticed and solved this probem almost over two years. Step-by-Step instructions:
1) Clean install windows xp(sp2) onto a "proper" sample compuer. The "proper" computer is very important! My expierence: MB with Intel440BX, deactivate all extensions(sound, modem,lan,1394... etc), use a (for windows xp) unknow vga cards.
2) Copy the following files to "%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers":
Atapi.sys, Intelide.sys, Pciide.sys, Pciidex.sys
3) Registry prepare:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Though I cannt ensure this mothod works on all PC(for example, on which there is a raid /sisi-raid controller for system driver C:), not very, very and very very large amount of PCs.

htc, you're solution only solves the Mass Storage issue and not the HAL issue. Also, putting the entries into Sysprep MassStorage Section seems a lot safer to me as it's how MS intend you to do it.

HAL is quite difficult to work around although it *CAN* be done. I haven't put the effort into doing it as MS Premier Support have confirmed it won't be supported by Microsoft and that's something that's important to us.

Re: auto-installing drivers after Sysprep - that's what we do. During your unattended install, you dont have any drivers available. In your $OEM$ somewhere, copy down all the drivers you need. As part of Sysprep.INF, you specify the driver locations - see:

http://www.msfn.org/...topic=43483&hl=

for info on how I do it. Once you seal your machine with sysprep - take an image of it. When you put it on a machine, it'll do the driver installs then.

Hope this helps.

I tried the reg edit (after sysprep -noreboot), and also added the lines:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D0=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich5core.inf
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24DC=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich5core.inf
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D3=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich5core.inf
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2640=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich6core.inf

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27B1=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich7core.inf
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27B8=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich7core.inf
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27B9=C:\Drivers\Chipset\ich7core.inf

and the accompanying files to c:\Drivers\Chipset\ folder. Neither of these had any effect. Does the .reg file mentioned do the same thing as the critical device driver [MassStorageDevice] section?

Thanks for the responses! -Eric

Make sure you add these to your mass storage section as well as the Intel chipset ones, and add the -reseal switch to Sysprep. Not sure if it'll work for you, but definately works for me without probs:

Below is my sysprep.inf. All the above mentioned lines are there, and more. I also included a screen shot of my device manager. Anyone have troubleshooting ideas? I see people here doing what I'm doing, and it works on 5 or 20 or 50 models for them. I can't get it to work on more than two! -Eric

Set up as mentioned above, the image would boot on a hp Compaq DC5000, but not (just a blank screen w/ cursor) on a Dell L800r (PIII). I deleted video, HDD, floppy, sound, NIC, CPU, etc from PC and ran Sysprep again; this time it would boot the L800r, but "Disk Read Error"ed on the DC5000. What's up??

Ok, firstly, all that stuff you have in SysprepMassStorage is probably not necessary. In fact, in my initial test builds, I had loads in there that I got off some other forum, bu I had problems, so I trimmed it down and started again. Here's my one:

Secondly, the HP DC5000 is a Hyperthreading machine - ie. APIC Multiprocessor HAL. The laptop is more than likely a PIC HAL (all of our laptops except for the ThinkPad T43 which is only just out, is PIC) so both of these machines require two separate images.

The general rule of thumb (for me at least) is, all laptops (except really really really new ones) and laptops prior to P4 need an image built on a PIC HAL, P4 desktops (especially with Hyperthreading) need an APIC HAL. It doesn't matter if you built it on a Uniprocessor or Multiprocessor machine.

So try using the above sysprep section in yours, and make sure that you've got the right HAL type.

FYI, you can usually tell if it's a massstorage problem or HAL problem quite easily - MassStorage, you'll get a bluescreen error. HAL, you generally don't get anything (black screen).

Oh, one other caveat. Sometimes a PIC HAL *WILL* work on an APIC machine, ie, lets say you build your image on a laptop. It might boot on a desktop with HT, *BUT*, it's (a) not supported by Microsoft, and (B) still a uniprocessor HAL so HT will NOT be active.

Cheers, Dan.

I pared my [SysprepMassStorage] section down to what sintaxasn mentioned, no effect. I also tried changing the driver to a Standard PC HAL before running sysprep- no effect. The image is being created on an AMD system with a Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) HAL, and I'm having trouble booting it on a Dell PIII desktop with the same HAL, and a DC5000 with a "ACPI Uniprocessor" HAL (it's a HT CPU, but HT is disabled so it's a regualar P4). I'm not even trying it on any PCs that list a PIC HAL in the device manager.

So a blank screen (or just a cursor) is a bad HAL? What about a "Disk Read Error. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to Restart" with a cursor?

What is the difference between a machine that uses an "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC" HAL and a "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" HAL?

Damnit. I practically just wrote an essay in this original reply, then happened to go back through some of my documentation and remembered something that made it all irrelevant! grrr... :) I apologise if any of my previous explainations were vague or inaccurate. I realised I mentioned PIC and APCI as if they were two different things. However, PIC *CAN* be ACPI. Let me explain...

There's a few different HAL types:

ACPI PIC
ACPI APIC-Uniprocessor
ACPI APIC-Multiprocessor
MPS (Non-ACPI) PIC
MPS (Non-ACPI) APIC-Uniprocessor
MPS (Non-ACPI) APIC-Multiprocessor

You'll be concerned with ACPI HALs, as MPS (I *think) are only for very old machines.

In device manager, if you see "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (APCI) PC", this is an ACPI PIC HAL.

An ACPI PIC HAL is not compatible with ACPI APIC HALs, but, both ACPI APIC HALs are compatible with each other, ie. If you put a Uniprocessor HAL on a Multiprocessor system, Windows will automatically upgrade to Multiprocessor and vice versa.

Now, getting back to your problem - This would mean that the Dell P3 Desktop would be an ACPI PIC HAL, while you're HP DC5000 would be ACPI APIC-UP. You need an image for both ACPI PIC, and ACPI APIC HALs so immediately you need two images. I can't comment on the AMD machine as there may be other factors here (I don't have an AMD machine to do any testing on).

Additionally, disabling HT on the DC5000 doesn't change the HAL type, just switches off the additional functionality so you're better off just switching it back on :)

RIGHT! Hope that's definitative enough (and not too confusing). If not, let me know, I'll see if I can explain it better.

Dan

Actually, I probably won't need to re-explain. :)

Take a look at this, it's everything you'll want to know:

One more thing - make sure that there are no drivers installed during windows setup, but instead, install them after sysprep kicks in. You can do this by:

- From your WINNT.SIF, Removing the OEMPnPDrivers line
- Putting all your drivers somewhere in $OEM$\$1
- In your Sysprep.INF, putting in the OEMPnPDrivers line and adding the paths to the drivers there instead

This will ensure that you dont have a bunch of unnecessary drivers from one hardware type, that could potentially cause problems for another when you put the image on it.

From the MS link you posted, it looks as though my hopes of simply finding the right combination of settings to get one image to work will not be realized. Is there, however, a way to boot one image on both a PIC and APIC machine, even if it isn't supported by MS?

Thank you very much for your help by the way, Dan. The explanation of the difference between HALs was very helpful.

Check out this link:

http://www.nforcersh...pic.php?t=12269

you could probably adapt this further to automatically switch HAL when you actually get into windows (script it somehow), but you still have the initial selection which needs to be manual.

hope this helps

It seems very strange to me that the text setup on the Windows XP Setup CD can detect and install the correct HAL, but Sysprep (or Windows itself) cannot. Any indication if this will change with Longhorn?

none yet that I'm aware of, but I would think so, and I'd bloody hope so. Longhorn is going to be all about ease of corporate deployment so they'd better solve this one.

I hear you about the fact that Windows Install itself can figure it out but sysprep cant. Not exactly sure why but I'm sure there's some in-depth technical explanation for it. That or someone got lazy...

Cheers, D

Is there anyone out there who could put together something to add this functionality to sysprep? Lord knows I can't, but there's some very knowledgable people out there....

The APIC image I built on an hp Compaq DC5000 doesn't boot on a newer Sony laptop. Could the fact that the DC5000 is HT (but disabled) have something to do with it? It installs the APIC HAL, but is it not actually the right one?

Regarding building this into Sysprep, well, you can't really modify sysprep itself. You could potentially use Devcon prior to sysprepping your machine to downgrade the HAL type to a Standard PC which *should* work with any machine type, and then script something to change it back once the machine has booted up.

I was going to investigate this, but as I said before, MS doesnt support it so I can't argue with that (from an enterprise support perspective).

You're newer Sony laptop is probably still PIC. The only laptop I've come across so far that's APIC is a ThinkPad T43 (might be a newer chipset, or maybe something IBM specific).

You can do what I do to check:

Take the attached file
Run it from a DOS box with the commandline : SMBiosD.Exe > Output.Txt
Open the Output.Txt created in Notepad
Ctrl-F and search for APIC
If it is found, the machine is either an APIC uniprocessor or multiprocessor machine. The line should be "On-chip APIC supported"
If not, it is likely a PIC machine

That exe is ok, but it would be nice if there was a simple exe that could detect the processor type. You could then do a case in vb or an if statement and copy over the appropriate hal.

Running SMBIOS.EXE gives the error "NTVDM.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". This Sony PCG-GRT250P lists "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" in the device manager. Isn't that the APIC HAL you mentioned? This Sony should boot with either the APIC image I created, or the PIC one, but it won't.

Thanks for your patience, Dan. I'm getting very frustrated that I can't even seem to come up with two images that will boot our PCs. I need a solution for this soon, then I can begin working on a scripted install for the future.
