As you can tell from my post count I am an absolute newbie. I have gone through many of the tutorials, guides etc. and am ready to prepare my first slipstreamed/unattended Windows XP installation CD (using nLite).
The few topics I had to deal with and which I believe I know how to do is:
-SATA drivers: I downloaded the latest driver for my VIA KT6420 on my Asus K8V motherboard, from the Asus website
-Graphics drivers: I have the latest 77.12 Nvidia drivers for my 6600GT
-LAN: I have the latest LAN drivers for the onboard LAN, which I downloaded from the Asus website
-SP2: I already have a CD of Windows XP with SP2 so no need for separate SP2
The drivers I will simply integrate using nLite. I have never done all these text file editings I see a lot and not very comfortable with it
Another big question has to do with Hotfixes. I was trying to find which hotfixes I need to download for post-SP2. I tried a number of methods as described in the guides but get very different results. I installed XP SP2 on a VM and run Hfnetchk and got these results (17 total):
Patch NOT Installed MS04-041 Q885836 Patch NOT Installed MS04-043 Q873339 Patch NOT Installed MS04-044 Q885835 Patch NOT Installed MS05-007 Q888302 Patch NOT Installed MS05-009 Q887472 Patch NOT Installed MS05-011 Q885250 Patch NOT Installed MS05-012 Q873333 Patch NOT Installed MS05-013 Q891781 Patch NOT Installed MS05-015 Q888113 Patch NOT Installed MS05-016 Q893086 Patch NOT Installed MS05-018 Q890859 Patch NOT Installed MS05-019 Q893066 Patch NOT Installed MS05-025 Q883939 Patch NOT Installed MS05-026 Q896358 Patch NOT Installed MS05-027 Q896422 Patch NOT Installed MS05-032 Q890046 Patch NOT Installed MS05-033 Q896428
I also run Windows Update and got this result set which has 22 entries:
Update for Windows XP (KB898461) Security Update for Windows XP (KB896358) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890046) Security Update for Windows XP (KB896422) Security Update for Windows XP (KB896428) Cumulative Security Update for IE for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB883939) Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2005 (KB890830) Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250) Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835) Security Update for Windows XP (KB893086) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890859) Update for Windows XP (KB887742) Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781) Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113) Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333) Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302) Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175) Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339) Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185) Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
I then, through further searching, found Astalavista's Link for post-SP2 hotfixes which I downloaded, and includes these:
KB867282 KB873333 KB873339 KB883939 KB884020 KB885222 KB885250 KB885626 KB885835 KB885836 KB886185 KB886677 KB887742 KB887797 KB888113 KB888240 KB888302 KB890046 KB890047 KB890175 KB890859 KB890923 KB891781 KB893066 KB893086 KB893803v2 KB896358 KB896422 KB896428
There's also This Site Here which lists these:
Critical Updates KB834707: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer KB873339: Vulnerability in HyperTerminal could allow code execution KB873374: Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool KB885626: Your computer stops responding when you restart to complete the installation of Windows XP SP2 KB885835: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel and LSASS could allow elevation of privilege KB885836: A vulnerability in WordPad could allow code execution KB886185: Windows Firewall "My Network (subnet) only" scoping KB890175: Vulnerability in HTML Help could allow code execution KB890830: Malicious Software Removal Tool February 2005 KB867282: Cumulative Security Update for IE for XP Service Pack 2 KB873333: Security Update for Windows XP KB885250: Security Update for Windows XP KB886903: Security Update for .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 KB888113: Security Update for Windows XP KB888302: Security Update for Windows XP KB890047: Security Update for Windows XP KB891781: Security Update for Windows XP Recommended updates KB831240: Update for HighMAT support in the Windows XP CD Writing Wizard KB884020: Loopback IP address range problem KB885222: Performance of 1394 devices may decrease after you install Windows XP SP2 KB886677: Corrupt DBCS characters in Internet Explorer on Windows XP KB887742: Stop error "Stop 0x05" in Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 KB887797: Cumulative Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP KB888240: Add-ons not listed in Internet Explorer on Windows XP SP2 KB890831: Input Method Editor disabled when using MSN Messenger in Windows XP SP2
There's also the sticky on these forums which lists 23 hotfixes, some of which are different. And also RyanVM's Update Pack which is only up until May but has so many more hotfixes (around 40-50 I believe).
Is any one of these preferred/more trustworthy over the other? If I slipstream hotfixes and there are still some outstanding after the installation, is there anything wrong with that? Is it simply a matter of autoupdating whatever is missing and deemed required by Windows?
Thanks again for the fantastic site! I will give this a go sometime this weekend. The only thing I fear really is the SATA driver which I see can cause so many problems and often requires a lot of editing of txt and other files, which scares me
Cheers,
X
