Hi All. First post finally, after about a month of in-depth reading and searching.

As you can tell from my post count I am an absolute newbie. I have gone through many of the tutorials, guides etc. and am ready to prepare my first slipstreamed/unattended Windows XP installation CD (using nLite).

The few topics I had to deal with and which I believe I know how to do is:
-SATA drivers: I downloaded the latest driver for my VIA KT6420 on my Asus K8V motherboard, from the Asus website
-Graphics drivers: I have the latest 77.12 Nvidia drivers for my 6600GT
-LAN: I have the latest LAN drivers for the onboard LAN, which I downloaded from the Asus website
-SP2: I already have a CD of Windows XP with SP2 so no need for separate SP2

The drivers I will simply integrate using nLite. I have never done all these text file editings I see a lot and not very comfortable with it (really don't want to mess things up which I believe is very easy to do) so hopefully nLite can help with that. I believe it will, right?

Another big question has to do with Hotfixes. I was trying to find which hotfixes I need to download for post-SP2. I tried a number of methods as described in the guides but get very different results. I installed XP SP2 on a VM and run Hfnetchk and got these results (17 total):

There's also the sticky on these forums which lists 23 hotfixes, some of which are different. And also RyanVM's Update Pack which is only up until May but has so many more hotfixes (around 40-50 I believe).

Is any one of these preferred/more trustworthy over the other? If I slipstream hotfixes and there are still some outstanding after the installation, is there anything wrong with that? Is it simply a matter of autoupdating whatever is missing and deemed required by Windows?

Thanks again for the fantastic site! I will give this a go sometime this weekend. The only thing I fear really is the SATA driver which I see can cause so many problems and often requires a lot of editing of txt and other files, which scares me

Please forget nLite and also Astalavista pack as many of the hotfixes in it have now been superceded.

3]Since then he has done an update http://www.ryanvm.ne...topic.php?t=242 to include all hotfixes released on June 14th - so manually integrate this, too.
If you're really struggling with editing and saving text files then perhaps you need to really go back to basics. Although nLite will do it for you, you won't learn anything and using it also adds a further factor if something goes wrong.

Hi There,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have actually just downloaded Ryan's 1.2.2 update pack as well as the latest 1.2.2b update (sans WMP9). nLite I wouldn't use to get the hotfixes (I don't believe does that anyway, right?) but only to integrate. Does it make a difference if I manually integrate Ryan's packages or do so via nLite? To me it does not make much difference as the instructions for manual integration seem fairly easy to follow as per his site.

I don't believe there is any textfile editing required with his packs though, only the SATA driver integration. I am starting from the beginning really - having never done it before - and will do as I have seen in the guides and forums (although there seem to be sooooo many possible errors and different ways to fix them that it can be very confusing). Hopefully my KT6420 won't cause too many headaches.

Not true, you have to edit DOSNET.INF and TXTSETUP.SIF

Although you will NOT be able to use nLite to integrate the v122 to 122b pack. All you've got to do though is RIGHT click on it - hold mouse button down - drag it onto the I386 folder and select>Extract here. Then double click on __integrate.exe. Simple.

Thanks, appreciate it. I don't want to ask TOO many questions until I have attempted my first one. Unfortately the one thing worrying me (SATA) cannot be tested via a VM, but I have a new SATA drive so will use that for my testing, and subsequently for a complete fresh install using my own master CD.

One small question I do have though - if I do not integrate the SATA drive (nLite or manually), will I still be able to use an unattended installation? Will it get to a point where I can 'F6' and choose the drivers which I copied onto a stiffy? Or if I decide not to integrate them does it mean that unattended is not an option. In that case it is still useful as I can integrate all the other drivers and hotfixes, but it simply won't be unattended.

Just wanted to ask once again my query re: not integrating SATA drivers. If I don't integrate them, is an unattended installation still viable (will the setup ask me or give me a chance to insert the drivers) or will it simply kill the setup and make the CD useless?

You can either integrate in which case setup will not ask for floppy - or dont integrate - in which case it will, and then after driver install from floppy you can carry on unattended. Up to you.

Hi There. Thanks for the info - just what I needed . It is really jsut for personal use, for my own PC, so I guess it won't be a problem to install the SATA drivers at the beginning of the install and leave the rest unattended. I will try to integrate the SATA though for the experience . BTW do you perhaps know if they are not integrated, if I need to F6 at that particular point in the setup and insert my drivers, after which everything else is unattended; or would it ask me explicitly for the drivers?

I have indeed seen Bashrat's driver packs and read up on them before. From what I saw, the VIA KT6420 does work succesfully which is great. If I cannot get my SATA to work using that doc you linked me to , I will definitely give his a go.

EDIT: one last question I picked up quickly. You mentioned that for his 1.2.2b update you need extract the update to the I386 folder and double click on __integrate.exe. But on his site it says you should extract 1.2.2b RAR to i386 directory and delete __integrate.exe from i386 directory before making ISO. Does his directions simply leave the part out about actually running _integrate.exe (taken as implied)?

The directions on my site say specifically to delete __integrate.exe without running it if you've integrated 1.2.2b with nLite.

Thanks for the clarification! I believe then (as per instructions on your site) that 1.2.2 is integrated with nLite, after which the 1.2.2b update is simply extracted to the i386 folder (no further integration needed, right), correct?

How come with nlite 1.0 beta 5. When i choose hotfix and it asks me to browse the folder, I only see .ini file as an option. I can not select the .cab file i downloaded from Ryan's post. How can i integrate a cab file ?
